Nissan Altima - 2012 CVT Transmission My son’s 2012 Altima recently suffered catastrophic CVT transmission failure. It’s a problem I NOW know was so common in Altimas that the company extended the warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles. Right up until the year before my son’s car was made. The local Nissan dealer gave him an estimate of $4203.31 (before tax) to replace it — which is nearly double what he earned all summer. Nissan has refused to extend him ANY support to cover his costs. Which means he’ll basically be selling the car, which he worked very hard to buy, for scrap — because he can’t afford to fix it. That said, if there’s nothing anyone can do to convince Nissan USA they’ve made a shameful decision NOT offering my son any support, in covering a transmission they KNEW to be defective, I sure would appreciate whatever efforts you can make to bring this matter to the world’s attention.

“NOT offering my son any support, in covering a transmission they KNEW to be defective”

That is incorrect. You told us the extended warranty does not cover the 2012 model but for some reason you misconstrued that to mean they knew the 2012 model transmissions are defective. That is a fallacious conclusion. Their decision indicates they have corrected the issue and therefore have no obligation to offer the extended warranty on the 2012 models.

The vehicle is out of warranty. Refusing to offer free service is not a shameful decision. Perhaps he should shop around instead of requesting service from a dealer.
