After obtaining a copy of my credit report from Experian, I noticed an entry for Palisade Collections. I tried to obtain a phone number for them, but the only number I could find was from another Rip Off Report.

I called the number and was told that the collection was for AT&T. I have not had AT&T residential service since July of 2001 and they had never contacted me or claimed I had an unpaid balance. I told the woman that I completely disputed the debt and asked her to send me ANY documentation that she had to confirm that I did, in fact, owe the debt. She said she did not have any documentation. I asked her where she was located and she said India. I asked for a phone number/address in the United States and she said she didn't have one.

After I continued to press her for at least some kind of additional information, she finally gave me an 800 number, but said she "was not with that information" when I asked her where the number was located (city, state, etc.). She finally said it was in California.

I called that number and it had been disconnected. I have filed a complaint with the Texas Attorney General and have disputed this collection matter on my credit report.

Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

#2Consumer Suggestion

Wed, June 09, 2004

Check out the sections of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act two of which I have listed: 809(b) states that, upon being placed on notice that the validity of a debt is disputed, collection agents are required to cease collection efforts on that debt until verification of the validity of the debt is sent to the alleged debtor. 813 lists your civil remedies if the collection agency violates any of the prohibited actions, included that listed in 809(b). It also sets out how you go about registering a complaint. Hope this helps. disclaimer: this is not legal advice, I am posting this simply to give you a direction you may want to go in to solve your problem.
