Michael, Palisades is notorious for these kind of things. My fist suggestions are, stay off of the phone with them and send them a limited cease & decest letter explaining to them that the only contact is to be through US mail. In addition to sending them the C&D letter also send them a Debt Validation letter. Send both of these certified return reciept mail. Make sure in your validation letter that you explain to them that you asking for validation and NOT verification. Go to this website: http://www.creditboards.com/forums/ and read the Newbies section.
