I did not know until I just now googled Phillips and Burns to get their phone number that they were not a legit law office. They called me and told me that I was going to be sued for 3000 dollars. I told them that I did not have that kind of money I told them that I could pay themin payments. They told me that they would not accept payments it had to be paid in full. But ifI paid they would lower it to 2500 dollars. I spoke with both a Jacob Becker and a David Kimble. SO my mom took out a loan for me to pay them. They told me that with in 3weeks I would receive a letter stating that it had been paid in full due to it taking a while for it took come off my credit report. Well that was in December...mind you right before Christmas...it is now April and I have yet to receive the letter and as far as my credit report it shows as a charge off it doesn't not show anywhere that I paid it off...I am so angry!!! What can I do about this if anyone has advice that would be great

A third-party collector does not have the ability to change an entry on your credit report. The original credtor or the new owner of your debt can. Make sure you notify the owner of your debt that it has been paid or settled in full.

I hope you saved all your paper work that they sent you. You will need it when you send copies to your State's Bar Association and tell them that they are practicing law without a license. That is a felony where I live. make sure you document everything they did for you, everything they told you and all the claims they made and if they have business cards, so much the better. Did they have diplomas on their wall that were from acreditted law schools? There are so many things YOU can do to THEM! Don't threaten them, just DO it!

Tarzana, Personally, I would suggest that you first send them a certified letter explaining the situaiton, demanding that you receive a "satisfaction and release" letter, and demanding that your credit reports be updated within 7 days. The letter should also state that you have spoken with an attorney (which I am) who has identified several violations of the FDCPA and the FCRA, all of which will be prosecuted if they do not comply. Give them two weeks to comply. If they do not, your best recourse is to find a good attorney. Attorneys who work in bankruptcy tend to be very knowledgeable about the FDCPA and FCRA. Further, the FDCPA and FCRA both provide for attorney's fees in successful cases. Best of luck!
