Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
My mom received a card in the mail about five month ago, promising a gift card to Home Depot in exchange for making an appointment to have someone come to her house to test her water. The card listed the company as "AquaMaid". They sell water purification systems. My mom called the number and made an appointment.

A salesman came out about a week later. My mom is in her 60's, and a widow on social security. He wanted to sell her a water treatment system for 6K. I came to visit her at her home during my lunch break, and listened to him while I ate lunch. She told him she couldn't afford 6K, so he "called corporate" and VIOLA! The price was now 3K. She said she couldn't afford that either, so he made another call and WOW! The price was now 2,500.00 plus she would get a "coupon book" for local businesses. She was thinking he was going to be selling an upgraded Brita-type water system for a few hundred dollars, and she was sorry that she couldn't afford the AquaMaid.

I called her from work an hour later and he was STILL THERE! She sounded kind of nervous, so I asked her if she wanted me to call the police if he was still bothering her and not leaving, or if she wanted me to come over again and ask him to get out. She said no, and I said I'd call her back to see if he had left. This man aggravated my mother for close to 2 1/2 hours for an appointment that she was told would take 1 hour max.

Now, its been five months, and she hasn't received her gift card. The one number on the back of the original card mailed to her was out of service, with no forwarding number given. She called another number that was given to her by the salesman, and she was promised it would be mailed in "7-10" days. Never came. She has called every two weeks for three months and has been told the same thing.

I finally called today because I HATE SCAMMERS! I talked to the lady, and asked why the number on the back of the card was no longer in service. She said they closed that office down. I then asked if I could talk to the sales manager in Cincinnati, and she said all calls get forwarded to this number. So I can't get in touch with the manager? Nope, I have to talk to her. I also told her I spoke with the Water Quality Association, and they advised me to call the Attorney General, because this was a classic water scam. I asked her why the salesman would offer a 6K system for 3K, and she said that was all up to the salesman...he would be the one getting no commission, and that was their at cost price. Why would a salesperson spend close to three hours to not make any commission? I also asked her if the company would get aggravated if he made them no money selling it to her at cost, and she was silent for a second.

She's supposed to be calling me back so I can find out who this salesperson's name is and so I can talk with the area manager. She also gave me a number for "Dolly" who is now handling the gift card redemption (A Florida Number). I called and left a message....

Do NOT let these people scam you! They are located in Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa Florida. Also located in Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio. There are other "Purely Water" companies that are legitimate *one's in NJ*, but this is NOT LEGIT.

I will update with the resolution....and if I don't get one, its off to court.

I worked at aqua maid for a short time in 2008. The appointment was set by sending out a mailer that said you would receive a $25 Chillies or Outback gift card. When the appointment setter would call you he or she would ask a few questions about your water followed by asking if we could come and test your water. Upon arriving at the prospect home we were told to call in to "put me on the clock." this was going to let the customer know we were here to do business. The test along with the 3 ring binder of information was designed to scare the people about there water. We were to tell the customers about the "HIDDEN DANGERS OF CHLORINE" then show how it will cause cancer if they kept drinking or showering in it. The "Hardness" test was a skew because you were suppose to shake the container for every drop added to reveal a true color change from red to blue. This made the water appear a lot harder than it was. Everything on the family cost report was being added up to show how getting a water softener was going to save them money and save there health. CLAIMS: Kidney stones< gall stones, CANCER etc. were coming from the water. Now there are 3 systems ranging from 6990.00 to 4990.00 payments were 139 to 99. These could be lowered to 69.00 to 49.00. Lower payments for the first 18 or so months then back to normal (we were told not to talk about that with the customers) IF you got a system it was vital you got the paperwork back to the office and the credit ran asap. The installer would be on the way to install the system with in a few hours. The reason it's so soon is because everyone has a 3 day right to cancel .... But if the system is installed then you have to pay a RESTOCKING FEE which could be 1700 to 2000 depending on which system. THIS IS NOT A WAY TO DO BUSINESS!! RIP OFF!!!!! Check: tampabay.com search water softeners Type aquamaid or aqua maid on complaints.com Search ftc.gov (water softeners) search BBBSOUTHEASTFL.ORG water softeners. DO YOUR RESEARCH you can get a system LOWES for 800 this is there best one!!!

I was scammed too!

#7Consumer Comment

Tue, February 12, 2008

I received the same postcard promising a $50 giftcard to a restaurant of my choice if I would meet with a rep from this company. When the meeting was arranged I too was promised it would not take more than 1 hour. Matt came over from AquaMaid Water Systems. He wanted my whole family to watch...as he hoped my children would have a great science like experiment. He talked about having just been moved to Charlotte by the company and how wonderful they are. He talked about how his wife had eczema (ironically-so does my daughter) and how the system improved her skin so much so he wanted to work for the company. After a 2 1/2 hour presentation, we wanted to give it a try and were told the offer was only good for that night. We signed up but the next day-we changed our minds. Although the offer sounded good, we really could not afford it. I called and cancelled only to receive another call by the "manager" who offered to decrease the price and delay our 1st payment for 12 months. We once again agreed and within hours they were at our house installing the system. We were promised a quality pots and pans set, coupons, plus the giftcard that inticed us at first. It has been 4 months and we have not received any of those extras. I tried to call and cancel again shortly after they installed the system and all North Carolina and Florida numbers were disconnected. I contacted the financing company who told me to write a grievance-did that and am waiting for their help. Today I found a 1-866 # and left a message and sent an email demanding that someone contact me. The products they left for us are not what they promised, and our skin and scalp are just as dry as they had been in any winter season without the system. It is a scam-and we were sucked in. If anyone out there has found any resolution-please contact me.

I have worked for Aquamaid

#8UPDATE EX-employee responds

Fri, January 18, 2008

I have worked for one of the companies that promotes the AquaMaid product and have worked very closely with the owners, the reps and the customers that they have attained. I have witnessed a great deal of misrepresentation first-hand. The example by the concerned consumer "Leah" just starts to scratch the surface of the deceptive sales practices that these companies in question use. Leah is lucky that her mother was not pressured enough to actually sign a "purchase agreement". These companies work very fast. Had Leah's mother signed an agreement, which has no financing details besides the base price (before the interest rate or payment details are figured), the installers would be there THE SAME DAY to install the system on the side of her house. While the installers are doing their job, the financing department is doing their's. They shop the consumers credit to multiple financing companies, with the concern being which finance company will cover the most of the base price of the product. The consumers interests are not being considered during this phase. This is where the payment amount is determined. Now mind you, this amount has already been "promised" by the sales rep verbally to get the consumer to sign the agreement. Thats where I came in. I would have to get these people to sign the financing paperwork that by no means reflected what these people were promised. Leah's mother could very well be threatened with a lein on her house if she didn't sign. I have walked away from many deals feeling that I had just convinced someone, that couldn't afford the payments, that they had no alternative but to sign. I have numerous other ways that these people are deceptive and if anyone shows interest in this post, I will be more than willing to share.

The BBB in Florida has the company listed. (Aquamaid). Quite a few complaints. Also, the number the provide on the BBB's website is disconnected. I called one number I found online for Aquamaid and SURPRISE!! I got the same lady I just talked to from "Purely Water" that said Aquamaid was just the product, not the distributor. Lies, Lies, Lies.
