I took my dog who had an itchy skin condition to Rainbow Veterinary Hospital. The first strange thing was the place was completely empty of other animal owners waiting with their pets. I've personally never seen an empty clinic during regular hours. The girls there were nice, but the doctor just seemed weird. He looked at my dog and said, "What is THAT?" I said he is a Golden/Rottweiler mix. His response, "A rotten golden, hahaha! Look, we have a rotten golden here!" It seemed unprofessional but I figured he just had a weird sense of humor. Before I left my dog to be checked over and treated (I asked for a bath and nail clipping too)  I asked for a quote which was $800! It included putting my dog under anesthesia to have his nails clipped! I've had dogs my whole life and not one had ever been put under anesthesia for a nail clipping.

Anyway, I said absolutely NO anesthesia, I had several other things removed from the quote and the new quote was under $300. I turned over my dog and when I had driven 2 blocks away I got a call from the front desk that the doctor had to put my dog under anesthesia! According to her, he tried to bite the technician. I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it. My dog has never bitten anyone, he's never even tried to bite anyone. When I returned I asked the doctors why he didn't just put a muzzle on my dog, or collar him with a leash to immobilize his head. I thought that was a standard practice. It seemed very extreme to me to drug a dog into unconsciousness just to clip his nails. Dr Metzger became quite arrogant and tried to reverse responsibility back to me by saying he never has to muzzle dogs for that -- the problem was my dog's training -- in other words he was saying it was my fault.

Disgusted with his unprofessional attitude I paid my inflated bill, was handed a bag of drugs and expensive skin spray, and got my dog back. He was still heavily drugged and one side of his body was soaking wet! They had actually given him a bath when he was still under anesthesia! And then they left him in the drying cage but because he was on the floor and unmoving, one side of his body was still soaked! The whole experience haunted me all the way home. So I did some digging. This vet has a suspended license. He was found guilty of animal malpractice so serious that dogs have actually died unnecessarily while under his "care." Please don't take your animal there. If you had a bad experience with this vet, know that his license is suspended and please report him.
