Worked for Safeway for more then 10 yrs., per union procedure I petitioned for full time. Was given full time one day before I was fired. Reason for being awarded full time: Store Mgr. brought in mistress as full time and she had less seniority, so by union rules he had to promote us on bidding list before he could bring her in.

Fired for not Thanking customers by last name. It did not matter that I always treated all customers with the same respect and said Hello and Thank-you. It did not matter that I handled large sums of money and always put it in the register and did not steal from the company or customers.

Over the years I worked with managers that would:

...have you return undented cans from the Second Harvest canisters to the shelf, because the poor don't expect undented cans.

...allow a head clerk to dress as a KKK member for his entire shift on Halloween. The store manager took a picture and hung it in the breakroom.

...watch the handicap employees be abused by other supposedly normal employees. And management did nothing about this. As a matter of fact Safeway gets compensated for hiring the handicap and will leave them in the same position at the same rate of pay and verbal abuse forever. Safeway uses them in commercials to promote how wonderful and fair Safeway is.

One such handicapped employee went up to the store manager and confided that he was depressed. The manager asked him if he was suicidal. He responded that he was. So the store manager called the police and had him taken away.

...catch minor employees stealing after their late shift and take them back in the store to an office away from others bring in security and accuse them of other thefts. They were not allowed to call their parents or anyone and they were made to sign over all their pay including vacation and fired.

...swear to minor employees and ask them what was more important, school or their job at Safeway. Fortunately six knew the right answer and were fired.

Oh and don't be shocked that prices differ from store to store...that is fairly common in all types of retail chains, not just grocery. But Safeway raises prices on Friday and lowers them on Monday. When do most working class people shop?

Shoppers ever buy a Foster Farm chicken that has a Safeway weight/price tag on it. You can bet that chicken is old. Foster Farm has their own weight/price tags......but after a few days those tags are switched to the Safeway tag.

And the bakery scratch cake is made from one of the 40# bags of Pillsbury cake mix that are lining the backroom.

Corporate Safeway is clueless about their stores....only the numbers, and even then they still don't know how one store does it over another. Marketing has always started their stupid campaigns on Holiday weekends to anger customers and slow down lines with coupons,etc. Hey they are on holiday and don't have to go into a store. They have people that do their shopping and not at Safeway cause they know better.

Being fired was the best thing that happened to me...working for them was the worst.

I know that with your limited capacity to think has made you confused; NORTHERN CALIFORNIA with one "local" Safeway. Try 20 Safeways within an eighty mile radius as the stores that I refer to in the original letter. And just why did I wait a week after I was fired to bring up these events? I never said that I waited a week.....as a matter of fact it has been more then 5 yrs since I worked for them. And why didn't I file greviances, etc before I got fired. Again I never said that I didn't. As a matter of fact the company hired an outside company to survey all their employees. So I put everything in writing and nothing has ever changed. Gee whiz Vinnie what are my ulterior motives? I mean did I leave something out? Well I'll give you a clue......I don't shop at Safeway. Here's another......I don't like Safeway. So Vinnie good luck I hope that you can figure it out.

Although I appreciate your telling all these terrible things that the local Safeway Store has been doing over the years I am somewhat confused that you wait until you have been fired before coming forward. It would seem that if these accusations are true that a long term honorable employee would have filed charges or complaints or Union Grievances long before the week after they have been fired. You must admit it does give an appearance that there might be ulterior motives for the complaint.

It would seem that if these accusations are true that a long term honorable employee would have filed charges or complaints or Union Grievances long before the week after they have been fired. You must admit it does give an appearance that there might be ulterior motives for the complaint.
