Firstly, the resort itself was nothing less than terrible. The food was uneatable and the beach itself can only be described as a swamp. To my amazement, I found the sand to be infested by both wasps and sand fleas and the water to be merky, dirty and brown. Needless to say, I did not see the beach again and turned to the pool for comfort, which was overrun by disappointed beachgoers. I must admit however that the poolside conversation was somewhat entertaining as stories emerged of disappointed guests that actually paid extra to leave prematurely to take residence at another resort. I myself would have exercised that option as well, but was unable to due to the fact that the hotel casino had run my credit cards to the max the first night I was there. This now leads us to what we will call situation number 2, which was much more serious than what was previously described.

I wandered into the casino at the Santana beach resort to begin what I presumed would be a wonderful vacation. As it was my birthday, my friend and I decided that the evening would innocently begin there and maybe continue in the nightclub afterwards.

It was probably obvious to the two Texan sharks that were on the prowl for there next victim that neither of us were frequent gamblers. Upon entering the casino, we were handed some complimentary five-dollar chips and were asked if we would try a new game. Unawares of what was to come, we were led to the Caribbean keno table and met by a smooth talking American man. Although the game itself seemed simple and innocent at first, it later emerged to be a scam and I found myself in debt to the casino. What began as an innocent five-dollar bet quickly turned into a thirteen thousand dollar debt. To add insult to injury, it was in us dollars. Needless to say, at this point my nerves started to kick in as I found myself signing credit card receipts at a casino, in a corrupt country with security watching. To be honest, all I wanted at this point was to get out of there.

Completely stressed, the next morning and after having no sleep, I decided to do a little research on what had happened to me the night before. So here is what I came up with. It seems as though this casino and others in the Dominican Republic have been running a keno scam since 2004 baiting unsuspecting guests into playing a fixed game where they are then swindled out of thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. It also seems that both the US and Canadian embassies are receiving complaints about this situation and are taking action.

I invite you to visit a website that seems to be solely dedicated to exposing this fraud. The website is (((ROR REDACTED LINK FOR SECURITY PURPOSES)))
