I am almost 18. I was 16 and was looking at the scholastic website late at night and with out realizing what I was doing signed up to receive the books. When the books came I realized my mistake I kept the 3 free books and payed for the 1 book. When the next books came my mom got the mail and returned the package to scholastic and unsubscribed me.

The next month 2 more books came as well as a bill for the books we sent back. So my mom called and explained the situation to them and supposedly I became fully unsubscribed and wasn't going to receive anymore books. I still got books and billed. Finally I stopped receiving books because I didn't pay the bill that was charging me for books that we had sent back.

Today I received a (reminder) bill that says I owe $36.89. That includes a $1.99 charge for each of the reminder bills they sent us. Not only does the reminder bill say I owe $36.89 but that and I quote:

(1) WE WILL REFER THE PRENTKE ACCOUNT FOR THE NICK JR. BOOK CLUB TO A NATIONAL CREDIT REPORTING AGENCY.

(2) THE PRENTKE ACCOUNT WILL REMAIN ON THEIR FILES FOR FIVE YEARS.

(3) WE WILL ASSIGN THE PRENTKE ACCOUNT TO A PROFESSIONAL AGENCY FOR COLLECTION.

We would willingly pay them if we had kept anything that wasn't free. What pisses us off is that we are being charged for something we didn't want and returned to them. We cant ignore them any more. That is why I am finally reporting them for ripping us off.

any information on what to do would be great

You're Mom should send them a certified letter, return receipt requested explaining the situation and that certain product was returned to them. The letter should also remind them that you are a MINOR and as such may void the contract at any time for any reason - minors cannot be held to a contract. The letter should also remind them that if this illegal contract is reported to CRAs, legal remedies will be sought. Good Luck.

Hi Amanda, Since you were a minor at the time the order was made, and not legally able to enter into such a contract, it seems it should have been null and void. Your mom may be able to notify them of that fact and this may help your situation. Good Luck
