I am in the Med Sup business in Florida. If you join an advantage plan, your medicare goes on the back burner and is no longer of use as long as you have the advantage plan. The only way to get back onto A & B (which by the way is the best insurance you can ever get as a senior without being taken for a ride) is to call Medicare, tell them you were coerced into signing up for the advantage plan, explain that the agent lied etc and they will sign you up with a cheap drug card, which in turn will pop you right back onto A & B. Find yourself a nice med sup through Mutual of Omaha or another highly rated company and you can have 100% healthcare with no worries. I do this all day for my customers who have been taken to the cleaners and its a d**n shame that there are agents out there who dont care about the livelyhood of our seniors, I for one do. I am sorry you have had so many problems with advantage plans, I for one, have many available and I have sold none in the last two years, they are a joke. Penny

Karen, I am in the Medicare business but NOT with Secure Horizons. In fact for disclosure purposes they are not even a competitor of mine in our area! I want to make this clear! You DO NOT lose ANY of your rights and priviledges under Medicare when you join a Medicare Advanatage Plan. In fact it states this in the "Red,White, and Blue" 2007 book Medicare recipients recieve. Look it up people before misleading others! This is not directed at you Karen but to the others here posting without knowledge. It works like this. Instead of Medicare paying 80% of your bills, Medicare pays each company anywhere from $600 - $1200 per month per person signed up in "your" plan. This amount depends on County and State! So Medicare is paying Secure to look after your mother. Here is something else most people don't know. Even though you are on a Medicare Advantage program a Doctor cannot charge you whatever he wants. A scam here in Florida has been going on where the doctors office says "no we don't take that insurance!". Person says OK I will pay cash. You are still on Medicare and they can ONLY charge you the "MEDICARE ALLOWABLE RATE" for your locality. I had a guy get charged $800 for a procedure that should have only cost $405. Now they are stalling paying back the money! As far as your mother goes it is procedure that when you disenroll you are eligible to enroll with another company for the first day of the following month..NOT until then. Because of this mix up Secure is still on the hook for these bills and will be liable because of their mistake. Get Medicare involved NOW! Word of advice. Find a Medicare Advantage program in Iowa. Straight Medicare can be a disaster financially for someone who has major health problems! Get on a new program NOW! Hope this helps!

The comment that "you never lose your medicare" is wrong bigtime. When you sign up for a plan such as this even though you continue to pay Medicare B, your medicare coverage has been signed over to the company, in this case SecureHorizons. SecureHorizons gets a payment every month from medicare (in some cases as high as $10,000) This is the reason SecureHorizons is hanging on to this policy. They have billed and recieved Medicare and they don't want to undo it. I am trying to disenroll now and they gave me a box number in Cypress, CA. The reason for the box number is so that you can't send a registered letter. Keep raising hell. They should have disenrolled you.

you do not "lose your medicare" when you join a medicare advantage program. in fact, your medicare part B premium of $88.50 continues to be deducted from the recipients SS check.

Yes my mother is retired. And no that is not how these companies work. When you choose a medicare Advantage program it will take the place of medicare so that you no longer HAVE MEDICARE! Believe me I have taken a crash course in this stuff over the past several months. Secure Horizons was her medical insurance for Sept and Oct until Nov 1 according to THEM. They however won't pay for any medical bills that occurred while my mom was in Iowa. My mom moved to Iowa Sept 18th. Medicare started paying her bills again starting Nov 1st the day that Secure Horizons stopped "covering her medical expenses". In the meantime we keep getting bills from bill collectors from Iowa that want their money and Secure Horizons won't pay, Medicare won't pay and mom can't afford to pay . We notified Secure Horizons as soon as mom moved both by phone and by writing so there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for them not to cancel her policy as of oct 1st so medicare can pick up Oct. medical bills. This is just a very very bad company that you don't want to deal with, there are so many companies out there why deal with one that treats our elderly like this?

If she is how did she come to have this insurance? Is it a retirement plan from a previous employer? Generally with Medicare if your mother has another insurance from a previous employer but is retired Medicare is the primary insurance and should be paying regardless of any other insurance.
