Two people charged with animal cruelty
Sunday, August 07, 2011
WAKE COUNTY (WTVD) --
Two people are under arrest, charged with 10 counts each of animal cruelty, after 67 dogs and three cats were taken from their home.
Police say Carolyn Sue Burnham and Barbara Von Woodworth kept the dogs at a house on Professor Street. The ten felony charges facing each of them correspond to the number of dogs that had to be euthanized. Officers were called to their home late Thursday morning after getting a report that the animals were being mistreated.
Of the 70 total animals, 51 dogs were surrendered by the owners, while the remaining 16 dogs and three cats are being held under protective custody. Police spokesman Jim Sughrue says the animals were taken to the Wake County Animal Center for evaluation.
Joanne Duda with the shelter says the dogs had been crowded into cages, sometimes two or three at a time. Duda says some of the animals had tumors and open sores. Some have been euthanized. A woman who answered the door of the home would not talk about the situation. The animals are currently being cared for through the Wake County Animal Center, and various rescue and foster partners.
