My father suffered a minor heart attack in August of 2001. Thankfully, his brother knew what first aid to minister and the ambulance was quick to rush him to the hospital. If it had been up to Soldiers & Sailors, the hospital he was rushed to, he probably would have died!

Dad was placed in I.C.U. but instead of being given the empty glass-walled room in front of the nurses' station, he was placed in an out-of-the-way room behind the door to I.C.U. There he stayed, in the clothes he had been wearing at the time of the attack, for 24 hours. No one came to check on him or give him meals. No one bathed him or gave him a toothbrush. No one offered him water, or tissues, or clean clothes.

When he finally recovered enough to complain about the treatment he had received, the nurses quickly fixed him up in the glass-walled room in front of the nurses' station and provided him with meals and toiletries. They had apparently just FORGOTTEN that he was back there!

This is not my only hospital horror story, but it is definitely the most recent and closest to my heart. I would advise never going to Soldiers & Sailors for anything more serious than a paper cut! Who knows how many cases of medical malpractice have been perpetrated by this staff!

A Follow-Up to the Registered Nurse From Wellsboro

While I understand this nurse's indignation over having his/her hospital reported as a bad business, I am indignant at some of his/her comments and would like to post this follow-up. I certainly do not know why my father was ignored in ICCU. However, due to the fact that there ARE only 6 beds in this unit and that my father was for several hours the only patient in ICCU, I find it deplorable that he was given substandard care. I am disgusted at the nurse's suggestion that I am lying or exaggerating the facts of the situation. I would have no reason to malign this hospital unless I was truly appalled at the care given there. I was born at Soldiers & Sailors, for heavens sake! Also, as to the claim that I had no knowledge of my father's care...HE IS MY FATHER. I did not visit him the night he had his heart attack, so I can't confirm what clothes he was wearing when he was originally admitted to ICCU. In that and in a few of my other statements, I am relying on his and my mother's word. However, I DO know that he was treated poorly and my stepmother was still attempting to get the nurses to respond to her requests for things like food and water when I visited the next day. If the nurse who posted this rebuttal is truly concerned about the health of patients, perhaps he/she could consider investigating my claims instead of insinuating that I am lying and trying to shut down the hospital.

THIS IS ONLY A 6 BED UNIT

THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO THE LETTER WRITTEN CONCERNING THE FATHER WHO WAS "FORGOTTEN" IN SSMH ICCU. TO ALL THAT READ THIS IT SHOULD BE KNOWN THAT THIS IS ONLY A 6 BED UNIT, APPROX. 20X20 IN SIZE. THE NURSES STATION CAN SEE ALL BEDS. THE ROOM THAT WAS MENTIONED IS ON THE WAY OUT OR IN TO THE UNIT, SO THEREFORE EVERYONE WOULD WALK BY THIS BED AND SEE PATIENTS IN THERE. THERE IS NO WAY SOMEONE CAN BE FORGOTTEN IN HERE. WE MONITOR EVERYONE THAT COMES IN HERE, OUR FLOW SHEETS ARE SET UP TO BE FILLED IN EVERY FOUR HOURS. ALSO THE ROOM IS ON THE WAY TO THE ONLY BATHROOM IN THE ICCU. THE PATIENT WOULD HAVE ARRIVED TO ICCU FROM THE ER WITH A PATIENT GOWN ON, THAT IS NECESSARY FOR THE DOCTOR TO EXAMINE THE PATIENT IN THE ER. CONCERNING THE FOOD ASPECT, THE PATIENT IS ADDED TO THE COMPUTER AS SOON AS THEY ARE ADMITTED AND IS SEEN BY THE DIETARY DEPARTMENT. DOES THIS COMPLAINER HAVE ANY KNOWLEDEGE OF THIS PERSONS CARE? IT IS CERTAINLY POSSIBLE THAT THIS PATIENT WAS NPO (NOTHIING BY MOUTH) DUE TO UPCOMING TESTS THAT REQUIRE NO FOOD IN THE STOMACH. THE STAFF AT SSMH ARE EXCEPTIONALLY KNOWLEDGABLE AND COMPETENT IN THEIR CAREERS. THEY WOULD NOT BE HERE IF THEY DIDN'T ENJOY WHAT THEY DO. I FEEL BAD FOR PEOPLE LIKE THIS COMPLAINER THAT ATTEMPTS TO GIVE THIS HOSPITAL A POOR REPUTATION. DUE TO BUDGET CUTS AND MEDICARE CUTS SMALL HOSPITALS LIKE SSMH MAY NO LONGER EXIST. THINK ABOUT IT. THE CLOSEST HOSPITAL BEING OVER AN HOUR AWAY. NO EMERGENCY CARE WITHIN AN HOUR. THERE WILL PROBABLY BE A LOT OF LIVES LOST IF THE CLOSEST HOSPITAL IS SO FAR AWAY.
