I purchased a hat yesterday and was happy with it. But I decided I couldn't really afford it, so I wanted to bring it back. I threw away the receipt, but most stores don't require them so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal.

My boyfriend offered to return it for me because he's a little more aggressive and had a higher chance of getting them to take it back. So he took the hat and went in. A few minutes later, he came out a little flustered and said they refused to take it back without a receipt. They claimed they couldn't even open the register without one, and he was basically SOL.

I thought this was just the employees being lazy so I told him to go back. He did, and a few minutes later, I heard some yelling. He got in the car and slammed the door and I was shocked.

Apparently, he found the store manager outside and asked if she could draw up the transaction number from the computer. She said she could, but for some reason, outright refused to. He kept asking her why she wouldn't do it, and when he asked for the district manager's number, she told him he could get off the property because she was "the best he's gonna get."

When he said whatever and turned to walk away, one of her cronies walked up and she said she would, and I quote, "spit in that f*ker's face." My boyfriend turned around and demanded the hotline, which she gave him (surprisingly) and returned to the car. He immediately called the hotline and I sent Spirit an email.

The district manager has yet to get back to us and I don't think he will. This disgusts me. I WILL call the corporate office, get my money, and make sure she's fired. I can't even imagine my boss speaking to a customer like that.

The Store Policy

You go and state you entered the store 2x to get your money back and without a receipt..... 1st each register has the return policy posted on them.   Understand, there is a store policy that an item must be in resalable condition.... That includes sales tag.  You then state no receipt... So then the clerk does not know if you used a discount coupon or how this item was paid.... Refunds must given based upon tender of your sale.... Again no receipt.

To me there is more to the story and managers are instructed no receipt no refund.  How do you know if the said item was stolen or from a pior year...  If anything you had a right to the 800 number to state your situation. But, Buyers Remorse.....  If you cannot afford something I would suggest stepping away from the store instead of causing yourself such undue grief.

Keep in mind refunds are time consuming and it seems as if you were difficult since you/ your boyfriend entered the store numerous times within minutes thinking your attempt to nag them and being aggressive would help.  Please keep in mind your atitude may have impacted your outcome.  I would strongly suggest reading the return policy and retain your sales receipt because Spirit Halloween is NOT WALMART!!!  They will help you pending your approach and the stores are instructed to help the customer, but its diffcult to help a customer who may come in being biligarent and causing a scene in the store.  In my case, I would have handed you the 800 number the 1st time and told you to have a Nice Day!!!!

I'm sure there is more to this story than what you have told here.  The company policy for all Spirit Halloween stores is that they do not offer a refund without a receipt.  They will exchange it as long as it was in saleable condition.  The return policy was written on the receipt that you failed to keep.  Yes the manager on duty can look in the system for your exact sale but honestly it's a pain in the rear and time consuming.  It's not just swiping your credit card and voila there it is.  As a former store manager it was more often than not that the customers got nasty with my staff and I before we did it in return.  Working seasonal retail is not an easy job especially when you deal with ignorant, angry and rude customers.  We get stuff thrown at us, spit at, yelled at and even threatened.  We do the best we can under the circumstances.  I'm pretty sure the situation could have been handled differently on both ends, wouldn't you agree?

It's not true that most places don't require receipts and even if they don't, it has nothing to do with THIS store.  They can have their own policies

I expect your 'aggressive' boyfriend began the snippiness and I expect he went well beyond snippiness.

Your boss may well have spoken to 'this' customer like that, they are not required to put up with a bunch bull**** from 'aggressive' boyfriends.

Their website says they will take any item back if you're not happy. There is nothing about receipts. Very few chains require receipts anymore because they can look them up in their computers. She was just being difficult and making her own rules.

And he did get snippy, after she was. There is no excuse for hm threatening to throw him off the property or spit in his face.

If it "wouldn't be a big deal" why would it matter if your boyfriend was a "little more aggressive".  The fact is you knew it was a big deal and they wouldn't return it.  So you thought you could send your "aggressive" boyfriend into the store to try and bully them into returning it.

My guess is that your boyfriend in trying to get them to return it got a little to "aggressive" and the confrontation resulted.

As for receipts, you are incorrect.  Most stores do require a receipt for a refund, as that is the only way you can not only prove that you bought it, but the price you paid and the method of payment.  Without a receipt the chances of a store refunding you the purchase is slim, the best you may have expected is for them to give you a "Store Credit".

But they require a receipt and you didn't have one.  I'm sure your boyfriend then got obnoxious.

Keep your receipts or keep the product.
