I was contacted in August 2014 by someone from STA Check Processing stating that I was about to be sued for a check I had written in 2006 at a check advance store and did not pickup. Given the length of time and realizing that I had some financial difficulties during that time wanted to clear my record (even though I didnt' recall still oweing). Over the last 7 years I had been working very hard to clear all old debts and get my credit in excellent rating (above 750) and did not want this to affect it. So, I agreed to a settlement of $595 to be paid to STA Check Processing on 8/29/2014 and it cleared. However, I never received a letter stating that this debt was paid in full. Fast forward a year and a few months...November 2015, I received a voicemail from a "local processor" that I will be served papers at my home and place of employment for an action that has been brought against me. As I racked my brain to try and think of what this could possibly be...I decided to call the number back because I did not want anyone to come to my place of employment. Upon calling the number 866-676-2418, it was identified as Check & Credit Reporting. I provided the reference number from the voicemail and the man said he needed to transfer me to the legal department. A lady named Sherrie, ext 113, was very rude telling me I needed to pay this today or they would send the summons and I would have to go to court and pay almost $3,000. Ironically I was on jury duty and could not really talk to her, but I informed her that I did not know what this was about (which I began to think it was the same as STA) and I was not going to provide her any financial information or agree to settle /make a payment over th phone today. She began to tell me how she would then go ahead and proceed and I could contest in court. I told her that if you are telling me that you can't tell me who this is from, provide me a bill or anything then you go right ahead and do what you need to do. After getting home I begin to research my records and located a copy of the payment to STA from my credit card and although I didn't have the bill I was sure it was the same. So, I called my bank to have them send me a copy of the bill and the payment information for my records. Then I begin to look up STA and see all the fraud reports! All I can say is I'm really ticked off - bring it on STA/Check & Credit Reproting or who/whatever you really are...I can't wait for her to call me back so I can inform her that I am going to file a lawsuit against them for fraud and defemation of character if they contact my place of employment.
