Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

I bought an office chair from our local Staples Store.  After using it for a few days I developed excruciating back pain.  It took several days for me to realize that the chair was not a good fit for me and it was the cause of my back pain.  It took several more days for my back to get better in order to return the chair.  I called the store and they said that their return policy was for only 14 days.  I checked my receipt and could not find that so I asked to speak to the manager.  He repeated the same thing, but said he would help me out if I wanted to trade it and if I bought their Square-trade protection plan on the next chair.  I agreed.  As we were transporting the chair we lost one of the castors and could not find it.  We ended up having to purchase a new castor from the manufacturer so we could return the chair.  It took several more days to get the new castor.  Finally, we got the chair back to the store.

The mgr. told me to go find another chair that I wanted and he would be happy to  exchange it for us.  So, I found one that cost twice as much but I was willing to pay the difference and purchase their protection plan also.  However, the mgr. then told us that we could only get less than half of what we paid for the chair because it was now on "clearance sale" for that amount and that's all we could get.  I told him I couldn't purchase another chair if I couldn't get what I paid for the returned chair.  He said he could only give me a store credit then for less than 1/2 of what I paid for the chair.  I decided to just take my chair back even if I had to donate it to a charity I didn't want to be ripped off!!

But wait!  There's an even bigger ripp off at the end of my story.  While the mgr., my husband, and I were discussing this problem, the store sold my chair that I was returning!!  They sold it right there while it was in the buggy waiting on us to find a replacement chair and sold it without our knowledge or permission. I thought only used car dealers did that!!  So, now the only option was to take a store credit.  I feel ripped off!!

Florida Granny did have receipt for the chair

I did have the receipt for the office chair.  I still have it.  The manager saw it. The receipt was never the problem.  Their rigid and unfair return policy and only allowing $50. in return for an item that cost $132.00 a few weeks prior was the rip-off to which I was referring.  Perhaps you misunderstood my comment about not finding the return policy written on my receipt? Or maybe you just have a problem with my age or you don't like grandmothers.

I don't know how I could be more clear on the store selling the chair before we actually returned it.  We had it in the buggy at the Custom Service counter (front of the store) where they told us to leave it while we went in the back to look at office chairs.  The manager even told us that we could either take the $50. store credit or take the chair back home.  But when we decided to take the chair back home with us, that is when he found out that it had been sold and told us.

I have my receipt, the store manager's card and info., the $50. store credit card, and all the chair's paperwork that came with it.  Heck, I even have the big old gigantic box the chair came in...before my husband put it together.

There is a simple way to avoid this "RipOff".   All you need to do is show the manager your receipt showing the price you paid.  Oh..whoops you don't have it anymore.  Well I guess since you are a Granny he should just take you at your word for what you actually paid for it right?

Or perhaps it was a time issue, where you in fact did not make it back within 14 days.  So even if you had a receipt because it is now on clearance that is all they could do for you.  But of course you wouldn't think it was fair...after all you lost one of the wheels and had to pay additional money to replace it before you could return it...so you should get some "brownie points" for that right?  After all you are a Granny.

As for them selling the chair.  Like most of your report it is lacking a lot of detail as to the exact situation.  But since you were in the store to do the exchange it could be seen that you intended to actually do the exchange.
