Strain Family Horse Farm has a horrible business. Poor horses had cuts/sores and looked badly abused on drugs in Granby Connecticut
Went to the Strain Farm with high hopes in finding my future horse. Strain pulled out a bunch of horses and most of them had dripping noses and open sores on them I was appalled and felt bad for the poor horses they looked like they had just come from a slaughter house, foolishly I pushed it out of my mind but I was still upset about the condition they were in. The stalls were very small and hadnt been mucked out in days, they had turnout pastures but none of the horses were turned out just cramed into their tiny stalls. None of the workers rode with helmets and didn't let me tack up any of the horses so I couldn't watch to see how they reacted to the girth/bridle or saddle being put on. I tried out about 4 horses and only liked one of them. I looked at a very nice paint mare who was 5yrs old and seemed like a dream she did everything I asked of her. I came a few days later to try her out again, and asked if I could ride her on a trail and Strain refused saying it was a "liablity" and that his employees would ride her instead on the trail. She was brave so again despite all the red flags I pushed it aside. I really wanted this mare! I asked her price and he said 7k. I was astonished! this horse who had never shown before or had any papers confirming her breed which was paint/thoroughbred supposably and he was asking 7k! I said no way, shes worth about 4k max! espeically sense I have no access to medical records so I can't see if she had ever been lame or coliced in her life. Strain also called her a gelding multiple times when she is a mare, I seemed to know more about this horse than the person selling her. On the website it says she is a registered paint as well so that was a total lie, finally I said forget as the red flags were just too great and I didn't like any of the other horses he showed me.
The most disturbing thing to me was that Strain was hestitant about letting my own vet check her out, he wanted his vet to look at her and do the PPE, I refused because of the possibly the vet might be biast. I also told him about wanting xrays done and a blood test, again he was hesitant so I walked. They buy horses for under 1k in auction and sell for way more which is criminal in my mind. I'm glad I went with my gut and did'nt purchase a horse from Strains! I now have a lovely ottb mare who came from a loving home and has no problems! One of my friends purchased two horses from Strains recently I didn't say anything to her but I sure wish I did. What do you know the horses they bought bucked, reared kicked you name any vice these horses had it. One even came down with strangles and the whole barn was on quarantine. I feel horribly for her and wish I had advised her not to buy from strains. The paint mare I looked at sold and I was happy that she found a good home but was immedietly back on the site two weeks later she had been returned, I had dodged a bullet with this barn and am so happy I didn't purchase from strains. if you fall in love with a horse there and I advise you not to, please make sure a PPE is done with YOUR vet and blood work and xrays on all legs are done as well. PLEASE BE VERY CAUTIOUS WITH THIS DEALER BARN!
