Carol, The first thing you have to do is stay off the phone!! You will never get anthing done over the phone, and the call "never existed" if you ever go to court. Communicate ONLY in writing and by certified mail, return reciept requested. Put the certified# on the letter itself, and keep a copy for your records. Now, when you have a collections account on your credit report, ONLY contact the credit bureaus with the dispute and the specific people who reported it. The original "creditor" should NEVER be contacted as they cannot do anything once sold or assigned for collection. You have the right under federal law that your credit report be complete and accurate. The FCRA gives you these rights. You can sue. If you "settled" the account, than you should have proof of payment, right? That along with your dispute should get it removed. Stay off the phone.
