Just to clear up some misunderstandings;
1) the worst thing that could happen with pterygium surgery is that the pterygium will grow back.
2) A medication named mitomycin was provided and is commonly used by asute pterygium surgeons. This medication when PROPERLY used decreases the possibility of pterygium reoccurance; however, does come with a list of complications (just like all drugs). Patients are advised of this medications complications such as possible thinning of the sclera again, if not properly used.
3) Lubricating drops are provided to all patients that MUST be used frequently along side the mitomycin to again avoid the thinning of the sclera and other complications.
Everyone reading this please note the "hole" in this man's eye was NOT caused by the surgery itself but, improper management of the medication.
I have asked Dr.Tayani to post his rebuttal to this exact case; there is always two sides to a story. Thank you for allowing me to speak briefly in regards to this type of case.
