I was looking for an apartments on Craigslist. I responded to an ad. I got a reply shortly after telling me to schedule a showing I had to have a valid Id and follow a link to a service called tenantverfied.com and print out the background check to bring with me to the showing. I did so and paid 39.95. I sent an email to the "landlord" and never received a reply. Now I'm out 39.95. I plan on calling my back Monday morning. I realized it was a scan when I received a similar email unsolicited from someone I never replied to. Similar wording and all. I googled tenant verified and found pages and pages of people complaint about being scammed. I can't believe I fell for this. I have limited funds for my move and I'm pretty sure ill never see that money again.

Refunded finally

Best and fastest way to recieve a refund is to email them at [email protected].

I emailed and explained what happened. I received a quick response asking for my info. I replied with that and received a heartfelt apology and was told I'd be refunded and that they've started an investigation.

They said they don't tolerate this type of scam and they have identified the affiliate and will take care of them.

The next day I was refunded. Lesson learned!

Refund request from Tenant Verified

I fell into this scam this morning.  Living in a small town, off-beat requests from off-beat landlords are not unusual, although I really wish I had listened to my gut and avoided the need to cancel my card.

Regardless, I was looking at the Tenant Verified website and stumbled upon this under the Affiliate Program link at the bottom of the page:

Unapproved Traffic Sources:
- Trademarked Search Engine Terms
- Email that is not CAN-SPAM compliant
- Craigslist or any other classified ad site
If you promote using any unapproved traffic sources such as craigslist and post any scam ads you will be terminated without payment. Dont do it!

So I thought it couldn't hurt to call them and let them know I had been directed to their site by a fraudulent Craigslist Ad.  The woman I spoke with was pleasant, and didn't ask for anything other than the last 4 digits of the credit card used and my first and last name - information they already had anyway.  She apologized for my trouble and told me I would see a refund on my account in 72 hours or better.  I won't know if I was successful until early next week (since today is Friday).

Even if I have to go through the fraud process with my bank to get the money back, in the very least, I hope I prevented the Craigslist scammer - who I think is separate from Tenant Verified - from getting their affiliate cut.

Turns out that an "affiliate" makes $20 on each sale they direct to the site.  Plenty of incentive to run "unapproved" ads in the hopes that nobody will call TV to report.

Moral?  Call Tenant Verified and put these scammers out of business!

I posted my own complaint but wanted to respond to yours also. Im sorry you were scammed these people are scum!!!

I too was naive to this scam. I called my bank after the fact and was told they could not do anything about it. I have filed another complaint with my bank requesting a review of this due to it being a scam and fraudulent services.

I would not have noticed this to be a scam until I received a second email from another person for the same rental.  My suggestion is to never look for rentals on craigslist, drive around the neighborhood and call on the rental signs you find. Its much safer!

There is another one out there doing the same thing but with a credit report. I will post another ripoff on it but here the link they sent me to do a credit report... bvncheckreport.org/JkSVZkJXM/

Dont fall for that one either!  Copy of email from tenant verify scam

The property is a 3 bedroom 2.0 bath with garage and washer / dryer. Pets are accepted with a $100 cleaning charge.
Requirements to lease our property are as follows:
1. Drivers license
2. First months rent and optional fee for pets
3. Rental Agreement, I will bring this to the showing
(It's month to month, 6 month or a 1 year lease)
4. Completed background check for each applicant
The provider we use is Tenant Verified, here is a link.
This is an affordable way for me to screen applicants based on prior tenant history and employment information. If you have a felony or poor rental history, I am flexible and I will help you out.
Let me know when you have your background check. It's in a .pdf, you can print it and bring to the showing or email it to me. I am looking for real tenants not window shoppers or tire kickers, I have 3 rentals and a full-time job.
What is the best contact number for you? Are you available tomorrow?
Enjoy your Sunday!

I fell into this scam on a craigslist posting that linked this site. I paid the money got the reports and then never heard back from the seller. I searched into it and came across this site. I called and disputed the charge with my bank and also cancelled out the card it was on. I also called the company and told them that I was scammed, they refunded my money with no questions asked almost as if they expected it. I will still be filing a report with my local police dept.
