What probably happened was that they were going through a price change. If the price was going down, they should have changed the price at the pumps before changing the price on the sign. If the price was going up, they should have changed the sign first. Unless we see evidence that this is a recurring problem at this station, it's safe to assume that this was an error by the attendant(s) on duty and not a deliberate attempt to rip you off. You should have been able to get a refund on the price difference.
