Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
About two weeks ago I recieved a letter from this business in response to an on-line auto loan request that I had made. The letter stated that I was pre-approved for an auto loan. I was instructed to call and ask for "Mr. Roberts", I soon learned this was a non existant person. I provided them with more information and they wanted me to come to Portland right away. (I live over 300 miles away). I told them I could come the next weekend but I needed more information from them such as financable amount and interest rate.

They said that they have thousands of cars and would be sure to have something that would fit my needs but It would help if I had a co-signer. I told them that I could probably get one and would get back to them. Durring this conversation we discussed my trade-in. After they recieved my co-signers info, they said they could deffinatly help me, they had obtained my trade-in pay off info and we made arrangements for an appointment at their dealership for 12/28/02 at 10:00am.

I called to confirm on 12/26/02 in the morning and was told everthing was a go but just to be sure, the salesman would finalize everything and call me later in the evening if there were any problems. He said he would be in the office untill 8:30pm. By 7:30pm I had not heard from him so I called and was told he was not there. I was feeling uneasy about the whole transaction so before I left 12/27/02 I placed another call to the dealership. I was told the salesman was in a meeting. I insised on talking to the salesman as I was getting ready to leave to drive to Portland.

The salesman came to the phone and said everything was fine that is why he didn't call on 12/26/02. He said I could finance up to 60,000 dollars, then asked me again about my trade in and said he would call me back in 10 minutes and not to leave yet. I waited 30 minutes then called the dealership back and was told he stepped out. I insisted on talking to a manager, an unidentified male spoke to me about getting financed but that It couldn't be done with my co-signer as we live at different addresses and I was pre-approved for a much lower amout than quoted which would get me a pretty old used vehicle.

We had over the past two weeks discussed what I was looking for and how much I would need to finance. I belive that if I had not been so dilligent and insisted on specifics from this company, I would have made a very long trip for nothing. I hope this alerts other people to Thomasons misleading letters from the ficticious "Mr Robers"

Mr. Roberts refers to specific advertising, almost a code. For you, it may have been what we call a "bad credit mailer". Also if you had the buying power why would you chose a dealership so far away? Knowing you had credit issues, it's ANY salesmans job to keep an optimist outlook on the situation. Most times he is 90% not in control of the information being given to him, it's more of a finance person or manager that is trying to put together "structure" to send you over to a bank and get you bought. Fraud is the last thing that happened here, clearly the attourny general would agree. but the Mr Roberts thing is a term that was used in the car business 20 years ago when I worked in NY too. I think you should look at the more optimistic side of the fact that you did call back and didn't follow a white rabbit down a dark hole right?
