I purchased a Toshiba Satellite Series 5005 laptop at compusa for $2400 (approx). What a piece of junk. I got the 2 year extended warranty for almost $400 and CompUsa has replaced the monitor screen, 3 hard drives, 4 rw cd rom.

Guess what, it crashed again 4 days after the warranty expired. Calls to Toshiba (joke)resulted in "your cd rom drive is dirty" and "download the bios update and install it" LOL Now all I get is "Wrong Machine" when I try to boot it up. Their recovery discs never have worked. Now they want $300 to repair it. Is there a lemon law for computers?

Never buy a Toshiba Product!

I cannot agree more with the person above. Large corporations always reinstall their laptops when they get one. The original recovery disc came with too many features, too many programs that an average user will never use. Monitor this, sensor that, all these things not only take up CPU resources, but memory, and hard drive space as well. (Thus generating a lot of heat.) All the software drivers are on their website anyway. Go get yourself a copy of Windows XP, or 2000, and proceed with installation. You will find it working better than ever. (Of course, assuming you have a lot of memory...)

Hi Shelva, Fortunately, I did not buy the extended warranty, but my laptop died 11 months after I purchased it. Bad hard drive. Toshiba sent me to an authorized repair center and they replaced it. I reloaded everything and it kept failing again and again until Toshiba refused to deal with me anymore. Since they had "never" experienced a problems such as mine, then obviously there couldn't be anything wrong with their equipment. With logic like that there is no way that you will ever get any satisfaction from them. Contunue to spread the word concerning how poorly they back their equipment. Even a snail mail to their corporate headquarters was unanswered. Thankfully, because of my position as a college student and my knowledge and expertise with computers I have had many chances to steer people away from Toshibas. Yes, it feels as good the 20th time as it did the first! Now, if you want to try something for a dead hard drive try this. DO NOT USE THE TOSHIBA INSTALL DISK! If at all possible, find some old DOS install disks. I did mine with DOS 5.0. I formatted the hard drive C:\format/s. It took about 26 hours for DOS to format the hard drive but it worked. It divided my drive into two partitions. I then used a copy of my Windows XP upgrade (using an old WIN98) to veryify my elidgablilty. After the install of a Windows XP that didn't come from Toshba my laptop has run like a champ for two years now! Give it a try and continue to spread the word concerning how poorly Toshiba treats customers! For all those that love their Toshiba then great. More power too you! Please don't think that just because something like this hasn't happened to you that it doesn't happen. This whole site consists of a lot of people that experienced poor treatment from very fine companies. It is usually the experience of having a bad experience with a "good" company that is so surprising. Remember, customer service when there isn't any problems doesn't mean anything. It is when things break down and the customer service is really needed and it isn't provided.... that is when things don't make sense. Good luch Shelva with my advise. If it is beyond your experience or you don't have the disks then try to find someone with some old disks.
