The fact that the receptionist answered the phone "Marketing" instead of "True & Associates" was the first clue. The second was the absence of a company sign or website which was "undergoing routine maintenance." When I went for my interview, which was a cattle-call, only a piece of paper with the word "marketing" on it was taped to the front door, or I wouldn't have known I was in the right place. As I waited for my interview with company owner, loud music was blaring from the receptionist's computer. One of the songs actually had the word "motherfu**er" in its vocals. The nine other interviewees in the waiting room with me were slack-jawed from the shock of it.

Skipping forward, I was asked to come again for a "second interview" which I was told would be eight hours long, and I would have to dress down in a polo shirt, not interview-appropriate clothing. I'm embarrassed to say I actually showed up. I was told I would be spending the day at an "event" with Anthony, so down the stairs we went to the parking lot. At that point, Anthony told me I would have to move my car, as if I were going to be leaving my car in the parking lot and riding with him to the event in his car. Not knowing anything about Anthony, including his last name, I expressed that I would prefer to take my own car, if that wouldn't be a problem. Anthony's blunt answer was, "It would."

There was no way I was getting into a car with a total stranger with bad manners and an aggressive attitude. By the way, I never got the owner's last name or his business card. Adding it all up, I wasted my time interviewing with this unprofessional company. Beware.

I understand your frustration...

Hi Tony, This is True Apodaca. I would like to say that your frustration is very understandable. I would be equally upset if I didn't get a check after that amount of time. However, I do recall that the only time you contacted me was last week at the end of the week and I explained to you how we can take care of the situation. I was unaware that it had been so long and we did produce a check for you. As far as you "breaking down what goes on here"- you only worked here for a day. How could you possibly break down anything other than the sales you saw. I don't deny we do sales. I make that very clear. Didn't you see that on your second interview? Didn't we tell you there would be sales involved? Either way i would love to put this situation behind us. I also wish you the best in finding something that suits your needs. John from Tennessee, I am not Sentura. We are not associated with that company in any way shape or form. Weasel piss? Can you get any more immature?

Scentura? Is that you???

Geeze, this story sure sounds like a Scentura setup to me. Slimy office, loud music and phony interviews. The reason Anthony didn't want you to use your own car is that he would lose control of the situation. What if you showed up at the mystery 'event', smelled out the scam and decided to leave? If you had a car you could just walk and probably take others with you as well. If Anthony was driving you'd be 'stuck'. You made the right call. BTW, what were they selling??? Weasel piss (er, ah, a rendition) ???

I AM AN EX EMPLOYEE OF TRUE AND ASSOCIATES

#4UPDATE EX-employee responds

Fri, February 27, 2009

Hello, I am an ex-employee of True and Associates. I wanted to break down what is really going on here. The company has devised a glorified pyramid scheme in which people above you make money off your hard work. The pay structure is so complex that I didn't understand how it was broken down. I have NOT gotten paid for my work. I REPEAT!!! I HAVE NOT GOTTEN PAID FOR MY HARD WORK! This job was advertised as a marketing and promotions position. However, after working a one day on the job, I realized that it is not a marketing and promotions position, but it is in fact a sales position. Which means whoever has been advertising for the company is making false promises. It's been about a month and I have received no check for my hard work. I noticed they hire mostly younger guys/girls probably because they have more energy and are easily fooled and persuaded. Extremely shady and extremely shiesty.

Dear embarassed, I'm only trying to help with your Marketing prospects. NO, i do not have any relation to True & Associates, However, i have heard of them and like to check out as many Event Marketing firms as i can as an independent contract based employee. I have seen companies like this all over America and have been involved with these startup companies unfortunately at some point throughout my career. From San Diego to Ft. Lauderdale, these startups operate pretty much the same way. I'm not saying it is right, but If you want to get into a good reputable company you better know someone, have a college degree, and prepare to dig really hard to find these firms. Alot of these good companies are very tight within and only hire interns and friends of friends and maybe some other lucky people. I have been fortunate enough to have been in the business long enough to have a good contact list and interesting campaigns. Plus, the best firms aren't really located in Florida. You would have to travel out of state for more opportunity. Concerning the unprofessional aspects you claim of True & Associates, it is true that it is not a good sign to walk into, but i think True explained his situation very well. He is a new business owner and it is tough in these times to get things going. We should be supporting local businesses to jumpstart the economy and create jobs, not tear the business owners down because they are having some startup problems. You should try starting your own business to see what it's like. Also, attacking someone on here because of his/her screen name to somehow try to discredit what the person has to say, says alot about your character and actually makes you look quite foolish and immature. Not to mention it is a typical method for fascists.

Debut are you really serious that you have no problems with how this was handled? Lets see: - Marketing is "taped" to the Door. Note that their company name is "True and Associates". So for some reason the owner thinks it is more sensible to tape the word "Marketing" to their office door after all they are a marketing company. I could understand if they didn't have a real sign, but why not tape the name of the company? It is like for some reason they are running a state secret where they can't let people know their real name. Using this logic I guess you find no problem going to an attorney with the word "legal" on their door. Or going to your local grocery store and only have the word "food" taped on the door. - They are told to come back for a second interview. Not come back so you can see how we work in the field. They don't find this out until that morning. Again this is not suspiscous to you at all. - Then when this person offer to take their own car they say it would be a problem. Again not knowing who this guy is, or where you are going. You would of course just jump right in the car right? - Now debut you say that you have been with companies that have done this at "some point" in the hiring process. Was that on the second day, when you were not told in advance, and the company you interviewed at did not have the name of the company on the door? Now to the owner if you are trying to really do a legitimate business, your response here would not instil confidence in anybody looking up your site. "We are a Marketing company. That is why my administrator answers the phone that way." - See comments on why the secret in using your actual name. People are not going to call phone numbers at random. If they are calling your company they already know that you do marketing. I would actually hang up from a company that did this. "Besides I cannot control the specific songs that are played nor do i have time to acually care." - Umm..Satelite Radio has dozens of channels and there are several "business appropriate" stations. For you to say you don't have the time to care really says a lot. You never did address the very legitmate concern about the OP not being able to take their own car? Again why not. Are you affraid that they would get there decide they don't like it and leave, leaving you short handed from your "free labor"? While I won't say that you were going to do this, this is a very common scam. Where "marketing companies" get "potential employees" to go on-site to see what they do, then once there they put them to work for 8 hours. Of course since they don't have a car they can't leave. After the day they get so disgusted they don't come back..and as a bonus since they were actually never an employee you don't have to pay them..... Back to Debut your name is almost as unique as "True". Since you live in Ft. Lauderdale, which is just a hop skip and a jump from Deerfield Beach. Could there be any relation(business/personal) between you and True?????

The complaints against True & Associates inc. could be argued as valid in some ways regarding the nature of these new and misleading Marketing companies popping up everywhere. I have a couple tips for the complaint. 1) Anyone in the REAL Marketing world knows that any start up that claims to be hiring only at "Entry Level" and requires NO formal education without a College Degree and only high school education, is bound to be not such a HOT job. 2) Are you seriously afraid of getting into a car with an employee to scope out the field of an EVENT Marketing firm after you were already at the building for an initial interview? Seriously? I have been involved with several International companies that carry the same amount of informal procedures at some point in the process. It seems you may have been watching too much T.V. or too many movies. Do you really think you are that special that people are going to setup a multi process interview to kidnap you. Please.... typical Florida mentality.

Greetings sir, My name is True Apodaca the owner of True & Associates. Yes that is my real name. Let me begin by adressing your first "clue" you mention. We are a Marketing company. That is why my administrator answers the phone that way. Regarding signage and my website. It is unfortunate that you found my business when we had just moved in. However they are now up and running, by the way the signage looks awesome. Regarding the music in the lobby, i apologize if you or the others waiting happened to be offended by such language. I will not however apologize for taking advantage of internet radio which provides us with commercial free music all day long. Besides I cannot control the specific songs that are played nor do i have time to acually care. Moving forward to your second round interview which never took place. We dress down when working our events. We asked you to do so as well so you didn't look out of place. we wouldn't want you to be embarassed any more than you already were for showing up. Going with my representative, to the event, is something that i would have told you, during the preliminary interview, that you would be doing that day. Also, If you had asked his last name i'm sure he would have been happy to tell you. He's a great guy and i'm very excited to be working with him. He is tall though, i can see how you may have been intimidated. The fact that you were already looking for flaws must have become a self fulfilling proficy. I admit i'm a new business owner and am bound to make mistakes. But as i said in the title. Getting started can take some time. If you have any further questions or would like me to mail you a business card please do not hesitate to contact me directly. My office number is 954-971-2127. True Apodaca
