Over the weekend, a nice man came to my door claiming to be from a charity called Ultimate Unity which helps Urban Youths get off the streets and gives them another chance. He told me he himself was a former convict and works for this charity.  He said it gave him something positive in life and a second chance.

It was a hot day (over 100 degrees!) and I was impressed that someone would still be out in this heat and I heard him out.  He asked me questions like, "If you could talk to our troubled urban youth, what words of encouragement would you give them?" He also asked me if I believed in "giving someone a second chance?"

Without the sales pitch, I likely would have given to the charity as I usually do.  When he pulled out the magazines subscriptions, I honestly had no interest in them.  I asked about a Little Einstein book for toddlers and he told me it was $65!  So I told him I had no interest in the magazines or books and he said I could just make a donation offering to Ultimate Unity which is what I ended up doing.

After our conversation I came to the internet and found out that Ultimate Unity is a magazine clearinghouse!  Regardless if they partner with charities or not, that is not how the sales person represented himself to me. I immediately stopped payment on my check.  I didn't see any recent updates about this company and wanted to be able provide updated information.

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, sometimes to my detriment. I had a very similar experience yesterday when one of their sales associates visited my home , and had a very compelling story of people receiving a second chance.
Although I found his story compelling I explained that I was not interested in a magazine subscription. He explained that there were other ways that I could help him earn credits by making a 100% charitable donation to one of the charities on the list, and even pressed me to increase my contribution from $50 to $75.

I have no issue at all making charitable donations but not just to line the pockets of private companies fronting as charities. I searched their website for any mention of these charitable donations and have even reached out to a few Cancer Research Instititutes to verify any donations. I have been unable to do so.

I emailed their customer service department and requested that they either email me a tax receipt for the donation made on my behalf to Cancer Research or please take my email as my written request to refund the $75 donation for order (this is 24 hours into the 72 hour cancellation) We shall see what transpires.
