I have received a notice that I am in collection for a debt to Hollywood video that I do not owe. I have a vague recollection of being contacted by Hollywood video a few years ago, and as I recall, I was able to tell them then that I had no debt to them, because it was always my policy to settle any late charges at the time of my next rental. I thought that was the end of the story, and at that time, I had also heard for many incorrect requests for payment for many customers of Hollywood Video, so I could see that I was just one more among many for whom Hollywood Video was trying to collect on debts that had been already paid.
It isn't a great deal of money that they are requesting ($40.11) and it might be worth paying this just to make it go away, but I don't feel certain that it would necessarily be the end of the event if I did pay it, since I believe that it is a fraudulent debt. Does anyone have any more information on Hollywood Video and Universal Fidelity LP? Any recommendations?

I am an attorney in Seattle who represents consumers in class actions and we are investigating this alleged scam. One potential client reported a collection notice like this to the Washington Attorney General and the company responded that it would not pursue the debt any further. So, you may want to try that as well.
