Uniway of Southwestern Ohio closed their doors on January 7, 2008. There was no prior notification that they were going to do this. I received a letter in the mail stating that they were closing.

Membership fees were due at the time of joining. These fees were for lifetime and you only paid $100 per year for a renewal fee. After I singned up I went to Rick Ross, president/owner of Uniway, and explained to him that I did not feel that I had made the right choice and would not really get that much use out of the membership. He advised that he could not refund me and said that had he been the one to interview/sign me up he would have told me that I probably would not get that much use out of the membership for my circumstance.

There are Uniways in the southern states. It would be very difficult and defeating the purpose to buy something through a Uniway in the South. The purpose of the membership was to give members access to goods, furniture, appliances, electronics, cabinets, ect, at lower than retail cost. Items are not shipped to the consumer, they were shipped to the Uniway warehouse.

I had not bought anything through Uniway so I had not even exercised my membership. I did decide to make a purchase in December and found out, when I received the closing letter, that my furniture had not been ordered. Essentially I have paid $2500 for nothing. If a consumer does not pay their membership dues, they are not allowed to use the facility or the services the facility offers. However, what is the consumers recourse on the company when they no longer offer the facility or the service of the facility. Are we just out that money? They opened their doors in November/December 2006 and closed their doors in January 2008.

I have filed a complaint with the BBB and the Attorney General. Rick Ross has not return any letters or calls from BBB. Is it worth getting a lawyer over? Also, I am trying to find other members to see what they have done and I also have forms from the Ohio Attorney General for them to fill out if they wish.

I have heard that Rick Ross has gone on to find another job and that he and his family are fine. His father in law, David Shaw, was also a partner in this business. They lived off of the membership fees for a year and gave the members nothing in return

Ms. N I lost my job at Uniway when it shut down (without notice). I can tell you that it certainly was NOT a scam! I worked there from opening until close. The reason the business closed is because of the lack of sales and failure of MANY failed marketing attempts - not Uniways error. One marketer placed an incorrect phone number on over 30,000 pieces of mail - twice! The phone number was to a lady in Middletown personal cell phone. Rick Ross was following ALL the Uniway guidelines and procedures when you wanted out of your membership. Your three day recission period had EXPIRED. If you think for one minute that Rick Ross or David Shaw was living off of the money that came in - you are sadly mistaken! David Shaw NEVER received one cent of pay or revenue from the company EVER! David was the MAIN investor in the company and he is STILL taking ALL the losses the company has incurred. As for Rick, there were many weeks at the end that he didn't even take a check - so that his employees could! I would certainly hope that you wouldn't think that a business was started with the hopes and dreams of success was solely to scam anyone. I remember you calling the office and quite frankly - you are a pain in the behind. You requested personal attention as if you were royalty. We received your numerous emails and phone calls requesting us to look up pages of items for you that you NEVER ordered. You got angry when the one girl in the purchasing center didn't drop all other members to take care of only you! You were told on many occassions that only one person worked in the purchasing center - you wanted her to take care of you at anyone else's expense. You always argued over the prices -which we couldn't control. As for your order in December - ALL money was returned to you in check number 1186. $855.00 - Riverside Computer Desk, $128.25 Freight, $69.47 Tax, $85.50 Handling. Total of $1,138.22. Does this sound like a company that wanted to SCAM you??? I think you are angry because you missed your three day recission period and you were forced to the contract that you signed. From the beginning there was no satisfying you. You can still use your membership. It may not be convenient for you - but how convenient do you think the 5 remaining unemployed workers felt - one was Ricks sister, one was his mother. Neither of which knew in advance either! The loss of the business was sad. Rick really worked long and hard to make it go. He was a strong, honest and faithful leader. He treated all of us with the utmost respect. He is a strong man of GOD. I am glad he has a new job. He and his wife had a brand new baby days before he was unemployed himself - 3 days before Christmas. You can continue to be bitter, or you can use the membership. Get a life Lori. The world doesn't revolve around you. Uniway failed. Not on purpose. Get Over It. Robin Former Uniway Accountant
