USAA is by far the worst bank I've ever had the displeasure of banking with. They charged me $172 in non-sufficient fund fees when there was money in the account to cover the debits. They have done this twice. The first time I was able to get the fees back, but then they turned around and did the same thing within the following week and recouped the same $172 they had returned to me. Again there was sufficient money in the account to cover the debits. My statement shows almost $300 in my account when they denied one $40 check and charged me a $29 NSF fee. If you are in the military or work somewhere that allows you to bank with USAA, DO NOT DO IT! They will rape you with bogus fees and refuse to give them back. They try and explain their system, but have no explanation of why the record they give you doesn't match their explanation. I am going to take my bank statement to my base Judge Advocate Office (JAG) to see if they can help me recover these ridiculous fees. I'm also closing my account.

Money was in the bank

According to my statement, I had money deposited. My wife and I triple checked our statement. It would show a balance well over the amount of the check, then an NSF charge would be on the next line, and finally the next line would have the current balance minus the $29 NSF fund. That happened over and over, most within two days when there was money in my account. I argued over and over with USAA customer service. They gave excuses that made no sense and gave me the same answer when I asked, "why does my statement not reflect what you're saying?" That answer was, "I don't know what to tell you sir." So with that, I gave up and changed my direct deposit to a local bank. Needless to say, I haven't had a single problem since switching a few months ago. I also never had any problems with my account being short with any other bank I've ever had. When you go over 20 years without any problems with any bank and then soon after you switch to another bank and start having major issues, the problem clearly lies with that bank. I'm in the military and have had to switch banking institutions several times over the years. This bank is bad news. All military personnel should avoid this bank at all costs. Im not the only one having these issues as Ive spoken to others who have had the exact same problem. If only I had spoken to them before I joined USAA. Oh well, its water under the bridge now. Dont make the same mistake I did by trusting this money with your bank.

Just a few questions?

I understand you received NSF charges over 170. When did you have the nsf on your acct? When did the checks/debits attempt to clear your acct? Keep in mind you receive the NSF fees the next BIZ day. Also you may not have credited your acct in time. Also, you said it has happened twice perhaps your charges attempted to clear twice. If you had the money in your acct on time and was charged by bank error then yes you should be refunded. If not a bank error you would responsible for the charges. Did the rep you spoke w/ advise you what options you have avail? (overdraft protection, cash advace etc?) Please reply as I do look forward to your answer.
