I along with others I know have had VW Passats late model 98 and early 99 with engine malfunctions. What starts to be an oil light lumination will turn to disaster. VW says it stands behind its product with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. This obviously does not apply. Facing a 5,000-6,000 dollar engine replacement bill, I cannot accept their answers.

My Passat has 77,000 miles on it with regular oil maintanence every 5,000 miles. My last tune-up was at 65,000 miles. Now the car is on the blink and "no warranty" is being threatened. If you have had a similar situation, please contact me.

Dear mike I am the owner of a 2002 passat with 32,000miles my check oil light came on and I had the car towed to the dealer. I was informed I needed a new oil pump and it would not be covered under warranty unless I had all my oil change receipts. I can produce 5 of the 6 I should Have and still noWarranty coverage. If you come up with anything please advise. Thank You,

Hi, I'm also an owner of a VW Passat. At 2000 miles my heating core went. Of course this was repaired, however it took about 4 trips to the dealer and a few calls to the National VW customer #, threatening lemon law and the car was finally repaired to my satisfaction. I found the following website very helpful in regards to dealing with VW and people who have had similiar problems: www.myvwlemon.com If anything you may find someone who had the same engine problems and what they did to correct it. Good luck..

VW Jetta has Engine Problems Too!

My leased 1999 VW Jetta GLS (2.0-liter engine), with only 30,000 miles, died on my way to school one morning in December 2000. That morning, the engine oil light began to blink, and when I pulled over to add oil (as I had many times before), the engine ceased and would not restart. Under the car was a pool of pink fluid, which I later learned was coolant. The car was towed from the highway directly to a VW dealer. Months later the dealer informed me that the vehicle needs a new engine, and that it would not be covered by the powertrain warranty. That was in January 2001. It is now September 2002, and the issue has yet to be resolved. The car remained in the dealer's lot for over a year (until lease end). I eventually decided to purchase another vehicle. I retained a lemon law attorney who took on the case, and I finally had the arbitration in July, 2002 (after waiting over a year). Volkswagen won the arbitration; but I think I have excellent grounds for an appeal. My attorney seemed unprepared and I feel that he did a poor job proving that this problem was due to a faulty engine. To complicate matters, I was in a frontal collision with the car, and VW easily placed much of the blame on the accident, without evidence to the contrary from my attorney. Further, they said that the radiator must have been leaking, and that I ignored warning lights and steam/smoke while driving. So, VW claims that my negligence (and implied stupidity) led to the engine being destroyed. However, the accident occurred about 17,000 miles before the engine failure, and I know that there are documented defects with the 2.0-liter engine that VW has been using in the Jetta/Bettle since 1999. I have read many testimonials about these engines consuming excessive amounts of oil and am sure that this is what led to the engine failure in my vehicle. I reported the frequently blinking oil light to the dealer numerous times to no avail. So, I completely understand the frustration with your VW Passat. Have you had any luck finding any documentation or proof of these problems? The only document that I was able to obtain is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issued by VW that intructs dealers how to deal with consumer complaints. Any information that you have would be greatly appreciated. I need this information for my appeal (as mentioned earlier, my attorney needs lots of guidance). Let me know if you would like me to send a copy of the TSB. Please send any information you have or questions to this report below.

the problem on the 98-99 passat is a problem with the Cam seals. the cam seals leak causing oil to run low in the car...in turn it can cause the oil pump to go out and BOOM! your engine is out. if you bought your passat new you should have a 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. if you bought it used VW cuts your powertrain warranty to years/50,000 miles. thats where most people get screwed over. welcome to the wonderful world of VW warranty. i am a former service advisor for a VW dealer here in phoenix. they in turn have a report filed on here as well having to do with the same thing. look it up..
