All Wendy's in Tucson, AZ and probably nationwide are practicing this new deceptive sales tactic at their registers. To be fair, the sign listing the different sizes available are readily visible near the counter. Here is the problem - there is a small, medium and large combo size. When you place your order but don't specify a size, the cashier will ask "medium or large", somehow not mentioning the small size. This is called upselling to a larger size but they are being deceptive by not telling you a small size exists. They are hoping everyone will just go for the medium or large, making them more money. It would be one thing if you ordered small and they said, "Did you want a medium for only xx cents more?" This would be more acceptable than the deceptions they do now.

I am sorry that you had an unsatisfactory experience at that location. I work in a different franchise owned by the same individual. You are welcome to file a formal complaint through the Wendy's complaint system at the wendy's website. It will be sent directly to the corporate franchise office for that location. I am personally friends with the administrative employee who handles all the complaints in that office and can assure you that she does respond.

Wendy's is the only restaurant I've seen that uses these tactics

The first 2 answers both have valid points, however I still think it's wrong. Who orders the small combo at Wendy's? I do, that's why I think it's wrong. Do I have the right to say no? Of course, but McDonald's offers medium, large and extra large. They don't mention a small size but that's because they don't have one. Also I didn't mention that one visit there the cashier didn't say the "medium or large" line and after my order was placed, the manager pulled her aside for a second and I know that's what she was telling the cashier. Does it save time to only say "medium or large"? I don't know - does it save time to run a red light? Sure it does, that doesn't make it right. I worked in a movie theater and I know what upselling is, I didn't like doing it, but at least we didn't pretend that our "small" popcorn didn't exist.

In 3 weeks, a year will have passed since I was in a fast food joint...

I was visiting someone in the hospital and stopped at a nearby Wendy's for a bare Wendy's Spicy Chicken. And I did not notice many thin people there. I know how to cook foods using... ummm... usually 18 different spices, but I use no salt in my dishes while fast food joints like Wendy's use little more that salt for seasoning. So I suspect 'everyone' eating at Wendy's wants at least 'medium' and more likely 'super-sized'. So the order clerk is saving time by skipping 'small'. Who would want a 'small' at Wendy's?

I understand what your saying here, they do the same thing here in Mississippi. I really don't see the problem though, as you said, the sign is right at the front counter. All you have to say is "no thank you". If there is a med and a large, wouldn't their have to be a small? In my humble opinion, if this is the biggest problem that I run across at Wendy's, I'm a happy guy.
