The job was to build an ADA tile shower including one shampoo box and one pony wall.  I had a detailed drawing to scale of the job with dimensions and descriptions written on it that was all discussed in detail before an estimate given and contract written.  Half of the agreed price was to be paid up front, the other half to be paid at the end.  He estimated 3 days to completion.

Within hours of signing the contract (and the first half paid), he was asking for additional money to the agreed upon price ("the supplies were more than he anticipated" I responded that was more than double the amount needed for supplies, he said that he'd used the money to pay some bills and that he could not proceed without additional funds).  This was a pattern that was repeated - it felt like being blackmailed.

Though he was presented with a detailed drawing of the project, he first built the pony wall a foot taller than the plans, never did install the ceiling (yes, left the beams and insulation exposed!) and the floor is not level but bumps up before descending to the drain - all these items were specified in the plans before a contract was even created (yes, he had a copy).  He also is a sloppy, messy worker, leaving a horribly dirty bathroom, used two of my bath towels to do his grout-wiping, and worst of all, scratched and damaged the solid mahogany countertop

I very much got the impression from the way he had to come and go several times a day for supplies that he was unprepared and had never built this type of shower previously (though he insisted throughout he was experienced and worked for builders).   He was here four days, and still did not complete the ceiling as discussed and on the plans and left the house a mess (walked across an oriental rug though there is a tile path available, grout is on the frame to the door as well as on the top of my wood chest of drawers, and all over the rest of the bathroom).

The show piece of the bathroom is a solid mahogany countertop that is all in one piece.  The carpenter had left the piece of side splashboard that was to fit in the back sideboard and along the pony wall.  Wille Villarreal was shown the piece and how it was to fit prior to beginning work.  However, he grouted tiles TO THE TOP of the MAHOGANY COUNTERTOP - the side splashboard can no longer be installed as intended!  Every day that he was here, I noted to him that he should not be leaning on the countertop or putting his tools on it.   The counter was covered with canvas, but the tools have sharp edges.  Every day, I found tools on the countertop after he had gone.  There are now scratches and a gouge on my previously beautiful counter....

This was a horrible experience, perhaps it was a mistake to complete payments to him, but maybe it was worth it just to get him out of my home.
