The University was established in California on December 27, 1978 under the name of Southern California University for Professional Studies (SCUps) as a traditional correspondence school. The SCUps website hosted at www.scups.edu was discontinued in October 2007, when the University's web domain changed to www.calsouthern.edu.

In the 1980's the University received its initial approval to offer degree programs from the California State Department of Education.

CalSouthern’s Master Lecture Series

Founded in 2009, CalSouthern’s Master Lecture Series is a forum that inspires learning, the free exchange of ideas and creative thought. Each month, nationally and internationally acclaimed scholars, authors and practitioners deliver lectures on fascinating topics in the fields of psychology and business, as well as interact with attendees in dynamic question-and-answer sessions.

Every Master Lecture Series event is free of charge, offered by CalSouthern to the public in the spirit of scholarship and academic achievement. Lectures are held at CalSouthern’s Irvine, California campus and students, alumni and the public are invited to attend. WASC has reviewed the application and determined that the university is eligible to proceed with its self-study and application for Candidacy for Accreditation. CalSouthern is licensed to operate in California by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education.
