After three fraudulent overcharges some years ago I stopped autopay and went so far as to change banks as Charter/Spectrum has a reputation for aggressive methods of billing fraud.
I received my latest bill on 7/11, false dated to 7/1 and due on 7/15. The three day payment window is one method they use to intimidate customers toward autopay. So I had my lawn man (I'm bed-bound) take the check and payment stub to the Charter store and drop it off.
The next day I get an email thanking me for changing my account billing method. They don't answer the phone so I emailed them and told them to change it back. They did not. They changed me to autopay with no verbal or written consent. I have not been under contract to Charter for years. And no, I am not in default and never have been.
My bank says this scam is now legal due to some new banking laws. Once you write a check to a service provider that gives them perpetual access to your money. So now I have to change banks again. And I have to pay Charter by cash to prevent them from getting my bank account numbers and doing it again. There are no competitors in this area so I am stuck with them or use a Verizon hotspot with poor tower availability.
