LegalZoom is a scam! I paid hundreds of dollars for my DBA, EIN and sellers permit on Sept 29 2020. They allegedly filed on the 6th they've hung up on me since then.
When I confronted them on Twitter they acted like they were just then starting to file my DBA documents and then they filed another one without my affidavit of identity-& which you're supposed to do through a notary service then they found it without an affidavit, [I have no idea what they did with my first set of documents maybe they threw it away until they realized that I was fighting back so they had to start afresh] sent it to a newspaper which you can't do without the affidavit of service which requires my signature and personal appearance at the notary. Then they pretended that they DID get me my DBA but they did not because I got it myself!
And then after I said I didn't get my EIN, they also tried to do the same by sending me a bogus document to sign SS4 to send to the IRS for m8 EIN. I'm sure they did that because they tried to get the ein for me and found out that I already got it-- the IRS gives one EIN per person, just like a social security number. What they do and would have done with that form would have been to then send me another bill for the einsaying the money I paid for the EIN [which is free] is for their services, that this money they're asking for now is for the IRS! NOT TRUE. That form is to request a copy of the ein you already got yourself and then they'll send it to you saying that they got it for you!
I read complaints from two people on their BBB page that they charged $400 for the EIN and then they charged another $900 allegedly from the IRS to get the ein which you can get for yourself for free.
It took me 15 mins or less to file for a DBA. I got my EIN in minutes. Also filed for seller's permit. The total it cost to get your DBA in California is $26 and two dollars for the form if you do it online EIN and Seller's permit are free!

CORRECTION: They FILED [not found] a 2nd, bogus DBA without an affidavit of identity. FYI: I paid LegalZoom for its services on September 29, 2020. October 2, I went to a notary public and sent back the prefilled documents they emailed me. October 6, they sent me an email, saying they had sent all the documents and will keep me posted. From that day, they stopped responding to my calls and emails! I couldn't reach them..
I found out LegalZoom did not file any documents on my behalf in mid-November, when I decided to do a fictitious business name search. The search for my fictitious business name --which I came up with myself and gave LegalZoom, did not indicate that the name was taken. In order to start the application process you have to do a name search first to ensure the name you want for your business is not taken. If not already taken, you MUST reserve the name [and it will be unavailable to other applicants for a period of time] in order to proceed with the application process.
If not reserved, you can't start the application. If LegalZoom had filed my DBA application on September 29 as they claimed, my search result wouldn't have said NOT FOUND--it would have returned with the queried name and a bunch of numbers assigned by the state--meaning it's taken. I reserved my business fictitious business name myself and started an application online. The county recorder's office sent me PDF forms with the info I provided in my application typed in. I had to pay another $15 to a notary public for the affidavit of identity and $26 for the DBA application $2 for the forms. I posted copies of my filed DBA, seller's permit, and copy of my EIN on legal zoom'sTwitter page.
That's when they filed a brand new application with falsified a date that did not include an affidavit of identity. Due to election and holiday mail slow down last November, I feared their application would precede & be approved before mine-- which was mailed a few days after my Twitter post. They took copies of pages one and two of my original DBA application with a blank affidavit of identity straight to the recorder's office, so I called the county recorder's office and explained everything to them and they told me "the DBA will be granted to the applicant that RESERVED the fictitious business name. Applications are invalid without affidavit of identity, regardless of who files them". In a brazen scheme of reverse engineering & CYA, LegalZoom scammers filed another a bogus DBA application and sent it to me via USPS mail, rather than email as promised, with an UNDATED letter that made it seem like I was a new client, implying that my lack of response to fill out a bogus IRS document and sellers permit form is the reason why those documents had not been attained--
when in fact I posted copies of said documents I got myself to their Twitter page--so they KNEW I did not respond because I already had those documents! If you've been scammed by LegalZoom and you're reading this, please take 15 minutes and make a report here and then go on their Twitter page, and NBCLA investigative team well as their BBB page. The reason they've gotten away with this scam for 20 years is because nobody reports them and if you're in California report them to the office of attorney general. Filing a report here guarantees that whenever they are searched on Google your report on this website will show up to it's up to the consumers to fight these people and bring them to account for their abuse of public trust!
