This is somewhat awkward since this dates back to 2019. My complaint is with Zoosk, an online dating service. I had cancelled my account but not only did they continue to charge me but they charged me much more!!
I'll confess to being very lax when it comes to finances. I did contact the Better Business Bureau at the time. Zoosk is not BBB accredited. The result was Zoosk offered me a "free" month after ripping me off for a year. I turned it down.
BBB has 131 billing/collections complaints against the company in the last 3 years. 1.11 out of 5 stars. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly when the complaint was made. The charges posted on my account started on 12/30/2017 so apparently 14 months after that as the last charge before I noticed was dated 02/27/2019. All BBB could do was post my complaint. The response from Zoosk was one free month!!! This rip-off cost me $559.16.
One insidious thing about this whole affair is that when I cancelled my account, I no longer had access to the site. Of course they still had my credit card. And I believe what is criminal is that they did not charge me the year rate or the 3 month rate with would have been considerably less but month to month in addition to some other fee that I never agreed to.
I have copies of my Chase checking account. The following is my original complaint to BBB minus the bank statement screenshots:
In March, I had occasion to look at my bank statement. I am seriously derelict in doing this on a regular basis. On this occasion, I see not one but two charges from Zoosk.com. This is most curious as I had cancelled my account in 2016.
Below in red is the last charge I recall. I thought prior to this charge that I had already cancelled my account. Apparently as many have found out, cancelling the account does NOT cancel the charges. I protested this at the time but to no avail. So I got screwed out of $74.95. For many reasons, it’s obvious that Zoosk is not concerned with customer satisfaction. Not that it matters but for my purposes, Zoosk turned out to be a COMPLETE waste of money and I used it for a long time. Not even a single date!
Recurring Card Purchase 06/17/2016 Zoosk 888-939-6675 card 6010 $74.95
I have checked every single bank statement since that time. Nothing until this:
(screenshot showing charges on my statement dated 12/19/2017 to 01/18/2018: 01/02 Recurring Card Purchase 12/30 Zoosk 888-939-6675 CA Card 6101 $29.95, 01/02 Recurring Card Purchase 12/30 Zoosk 888-939-6675 CA Card 6101 $9.99)
then I see the same charge every month. Here is the last one:
(screenshot showing charges on my statement dated 02/20/2019 to 03/18/2019: 02/27 Recurring Card Purchase 02/27 Www.Zoosk.Com 888-939-6675 CA Card 6101 $29.95, 02/27 Recurring Card Purchase 02/27 Www.Zoosk.Com 888-939-6675 CA Card 6101 $9.99)
I contacted Chase and they blocked the charge. This meant having to throw away my card. After that I checked the previous balances and found that this had been going on since 12/30/17! Fourteen months!
Just the amount of the charge is absurd. From $74.94 for six months to almost $40 every single month?????? So $39.94 times 14 is $559.16 minus the refund from Chase is $519.22.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(A mistake above. It was 13 months, not 14)
I sent this to BBB. I got a reply from Zoosk offering me a refund of ONE MONTH. This was a joke after being gouged for over a year. Even so, $559.16 for absolutely nothing!
