I took my '97 Isuzu Rodeo to an AAMCO franchise in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I reported some slippage in first gear that had become progressively worse over the past weeks.

They assured me they would do "complete diagnostic testing" before giving me a quote. An hour or so later, they called. After "complete diagnostic testing," they had determined that the "forward clutches" inside the transmission needed to be replaced. To do so, they would need to do a complete rebuild of the transmission. It would cost me $1,500.

Since I did not HAVE $1,500, I figured it was worth getting a second opinion...I decided to take it to an Isuzu dealership in town.

Guess what? I had a bad pan gasket. THREE QUARTERS of my fluid was gone. The dealership topped off the fluid, and....PROBLEM SOLVED! Granted, I had to pay $180 for a new gasket, but please!

According to AAMCO, "complete diagnostic testing" did not include CHECKING THE FLUID!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was actually told "there's nothing we can do from the outside." How do they continue to get away with this?

#2UPDATE EX-employee responds

Yes, this is a true story. I was working there at the time, I do not specifically remember this paticular customer but I know that "sales tactic" is alway used there. Sad enough this shop owner even uses totally inexperienced (cleanup people who know absolutely nothing) to test drive customers vehicles, vehicles that are left there for honest diagnostics that they don't get! The decision for an overhaul was already determined by the shop owner without the test drive. That was merely a formality just to say it was driven. Customers vehicles have even been test driven by employees that have been given instructions to cram them up in park at 30+ MPH to damage something internally so as to guarantee a problem exists in order to get an overhaul from the individual! On one occasion the OWNER came in early and ( I was personally told this by another employee later the same day) started up a customers vehicle and revved it up to the limit and pulled it in gear multiple times until he broke it internally. I worked on the transmission myself and could not understand how the damage occured until I was informed of what happened. I swear this is factual.

They filed the following rebuttal to the above Rip-Off Report: Their email: [email protected] Their name: Tod Betts Their relationship to the company: Consumer Suggestion Rebuttal: I am the submitter of the original report, and I would like to rebut my own comments. While it is true that the folks at AAMCO in Colorado Springs did not correctly diagnose my original problem, the actions they have taken in the past 24 hours have shown them to be honest and conscientious. The manager called me personally last night to offer his apologies for the error, and in an obviously honest effort to improve his future service, expressed a desire to have one of his staff present when the problem was repaired. Not only did he make good on that promise. . .he also picked up the bill. I now believe the guys at AAMCO made an honest mistake, and I've been extremely impressed with the actions they have taken to remedy it. My hat is off to Greg and all his staff.
