Danile, I can understand your frustration with Aamco and thier unethical tactics and outrageous prices, HOWEVER.. Always get all of the costs in writing BEFORE any inspections or work is performed. This is very important. Also keep in mind that these types of shops do not give discounts because you are a student, unemployed, etc. If you do not have the money for repairs, you should shop around for a small shop or individual with less overhead to do the work. You never mentioned what type of car it is, so it is hard to tell what price is fair. Also, I am confused about you stating that you knew it wasn't that much to fix. Are you a mechanic? If you don't have the money to properly maintain your car, you really shouldn't have one. Ride the bus or get a bike.

You took your car to AAMCO, and decided the price was too much. You wanted them to just put it back together, and they said they would, for $700. You wanted a discount, presumably because you are adorable. You also want a discount on the proper repair, again because you are just so darned adorable. After playing the waiting game, they agree to a $500 discount. Now, you don't understand why they didn't drop everything and hurry up with your car...the one that the mechanic is doing for less money than he would have otherwise earned. Here is how it works in the auto repair business. There are three ways of doing any type of repair...Good, Fast, Cheap. You can take your pick of any TWO. Which ever two you choose, the third choice is immediately preceeded by the word NOT. Next time you want to haggle over price, go to the Garment District in Manhattan. As you can see, it doesn't work too well at ANY repair shop.
