I too have fallen prey to the AC Delco/GM battery scam. I own a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, two years old, just over 40,000 miles. It is out of warranty, so the battery is out of warranty. It is equipped with an AC Delco 7 year professional battery, so you'd think that it would last 7 years, or at least 5 years. After 2 years I found my car wouldn't start. Looked at the engine and the positive battery terminal had leaked all over that side of the engine. I cleaned off the acid and the positive terminal had been eaten away down to a nub.

Cost me $100 for a new AC Delco battery (only because I had taken it to a GM Dealer for repair) otherwise I would have gone to Sears if I'd known all the trouble that these batteries have had. Also cost me $134.00 to clean and neutralize all of the acid that had leaked all over the place. I have contacted AC Delco, they don't think that there is a problem and are not going to do anything about it. I have contacted GM and they are still looking into it. My car is back in the shop, 3 weeks later because it won't start now without a jumpstart. My car has been in the shop for 3 days and still no diagnosis.

They thought it was my alternator and replaced it, for $311.00, that night my car wouldn't start again. I took it back to the dealer and it has been there since. Because AC Delco and GM have no conclusion for me, I have contacted David Horowitz, a consumer advocate; the Better Business Bureau; and Chevrolet Corporate. GM told me to contact Chevrolet, I'm not sure why. I am livid about this total disregard for human life. I have been told that the acid can eat through many wires and even the brake lines. Hopefully we will get some resolution about this. Never again will I purchase a GM or AC Delco product.

I wrote this original rip-off story. By contacting GM and Chevrolet corp. and the selling dealership, I finally got someone to contact me back. I am being refunded half of my costs for a new alternator, and the whole cost of the cleaning of the battery acid from under the hood. There still has been no resolution by AC Delco to recall these batteries but if enough people complain to GM, they may decide to do something. My case went on for several weeks and now a file is made on the subject. The squeaky wheel gets the grease I always say. I never did hear anything back from the Better Business Bureau, or David Horowitz, but I think by sending out letters to the Dealership and GM with cc: to those people it got them scared. Hopefully I will not have another incident as they replaced my bad battery with another AC Delco battery.
