I have received a settlement offer from Afni, Inc. (a credit collector) for $49.63. They claim that I owe Verizon $99.26 from phone service that dates back 11 years. I filed a complaint with the BBB and they responded with a fake billing statement from 1997. First of all, this bill, dated 12/10/97, is from Verizon, however, GTE was my phone company at that time. GTE wasn't acquired by Verizon until the year 2000. Second, I remember closing out my phone account and paying off my balance when I moved my place of residence in 1997. Third, this is the second credit company that has come after me with a fake telephone delinquency bill. Of course, I didn't keep my billing statements from 11 years ago. I believe these credit companies target closed phone accounts up to a decade after they've been closed, asking for small amounts of money from a large amount of people. One company even went after my Grandma for an account she never had and she told me she just paid it off. I make a good enough living to do so myself, however, I feel violated and I'm disgusted that some random company could legally gain access to my personal information and threaten to ruin my credit history if I don't pay them.

It is never ever going to be on your credit report. It is way past the statue of limitations and the credit bureus know that. Even if a company tried to hit your credit report with something older than seven years, the credit bureaus flag that and will not report it. If it does hit it, you don't have to ask for validation or verification, just let them know it is too old to be on your credit file. Most collection agencies don't know who your provider was before Verizon bought the company and in your case GTE. If you received the bill after 2000, of course it will say Verizon. If you don't pay it, that is your business. It will just sit in some office as an unpaid bill. It is not going to go to court or hit your credit. It is not the collection agency that made up the bill, it was GTE. They didn't get it resolved when you moved away probably because they didn't have a good address or phone number for you. Whatever the case, Verizon bought the bill and all the accounts from GTE and make a profit by selling it to AFNI thelling afni it was a legit bill.

Send AFNI a letter via Certified Mail + Return Receipt stating: Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, I am requesting: - written validation of this alleged debt and that said alleged debt is within the statute of limitations - Cease all verbal communications with me about this alleged debt. Read up on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and understand your rights: (((link redacted))) If AFNI has placed this debt on your credit report, it's important to know that it's beyond the 7-year reporting period allowed. If they've done this, send a letter to each credit bureau stating: Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, I am requesting validation that this debt is being reported within the 7-year allowable time period as allowed under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Don't pay AFNI one penny! CLICK here to see why Rip-off Report, as a matter of policy, deleted either a phone number, link or e-mail address from this Report.
