I also received a letter from Afni stating I owed them $231.26 for Verizon Communications. The phone number they listed as "billing telephone number" is a Greencastle, IN number (765-653-1651. I called it and got the fax tone. The letter states "this is not a Verizon Wireless account. Please do not contact Verizon Wireless." No wonder they don't want me to- Ive never had a wireless or any other type of account with Verizon!

I suggest we ALL contact [email protected] and do a class action suit! What a load of garbage!

NEVER talk to a collection agency on the phone. Period. 2. Keep good records. This can be the difference between a good and bad settlement. Don't expect them to remember you or what you agreed upon. 3. Send all correspondence via registered mail, receipt requested and put the registered mail number ON THE LETTER. DO NOT SIGN THE LETTER TYPE YOUR NAME 4. Keep a copy of every letter you send. 5. Penalties and extra interest are typically fictious amounts of money added on by the collection agency to pad their profits. Sometimes as much as to 50% of the debt or more claimed to be owed by a collection agency consisting of interest and fees. This is illegal, every state has usery laws (which dictate the maximum interests allowed to be charged. That is except North Dakota. There are no such laws which is why most credit card companies incorporate there.) Junk debt buyer pay anywhere from 1 cent to 7 cents on the dollar, there is no way there is this much interest. 6. Time is on your side. As time passes, the creditors will likely stop calling and the debt will be filed away for future attention or until the SOL runs out ..

Yeah, I guess you're right.

I was going by the comments made that the lawyers always walk away with all the cash. I've never been actively involved in one but I guess there would be filing fees and such but have no idea what they could be.

John, the part you are not seeing here

John, A class action lawsuit is VERY expensive and very time consuming. That lawyer MAY be volunteering his time, but the expenses are still all paid up front by the plaintiff. I seriously doubt this lawyer would do this for free. Even more doubtful is that he would front all of the actual costs.

Steve, the lawyer referenced by the email address has filed a report against AFNI here also and has volunteered his services in filing a class action suit. So, maybe some indiviuals may make out better. I would really have no idea but find the attorney's offer quite noble.

David, A class action lawsuit will bring you NOTHING!

David, Class action lawsuits are a waste of time and money for everyone except the lawyers. They are the only winners. People always want a class action so they can ride on the coat tails of someone else's efforts. File your own lawsuit. It's easier than you think and much more rewarding. You can also go after criminal charges for fraud, extortion, or whatever. File a complaint with the FTC and also with the FBI Financial Crimes Division.
