Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

a young man knocked on my door saying he was selling magazine subscriptions to help pay for college. I explained to him multiple times that I could not afford to pay for a magazine subcription and I was not comfortable giving him a check. He just kept saying it was no big deal that I could call and cancel just to wait until the next day so he still gets his points.

I felt bad and frankly just wanted him to get out so I gave him the check with the full intent of calling the number to cancel. After he left I looked the company up online and found hundreds of fraud complaints against them. I tried the number and got a recorded message that the office is closed. Also if you read the back of the receipt which they don't give you time to, you may only cancel by mailing in your receipt within 3 days and that they may have already deposited the check in which case you must wait 4-6 weeks for a refund. I was lied to and told they would have to call me and verify the subscription before the check is deposited.

I cannot afford to have the check hit my account without overdrafting. I can't even afford a stop payment on the check. The bank said I may have to cancel my account altogether and open a new one since they have my account number now and can charge me for whatever when they see fit. It is Sunday so I will be going first thing in the morning.

I had a horrible feeling the whole time but just felt so pressured. If my 2 year old wasn't sleeping, I would be walking around the complex and finding that guy and beating my check out of his hands. I would call the police but I don't know if they would do anything about these people.

They say a lot of people will be coming around over the next few days and give you a yellow sticker for your door "so no one else knocks on it". I removed the sticker so if someone does knock I'll demand they bring me to whoever is in charge and threaten to return my check Or I'll turn in their info to the cops. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS. I feel like such an idiot because I knew it was a scam the whole time. He just woulnd't let me say no.

I have since spoken to my bank, and  they advised the safest thing to do is to close the account and open a new one since they have my account info. I'm lucky I wasn't harmed as I have now read reports of theft and even rape have happened to people by the "independent contractors" from this company or the many aliases they have. I reported them to the police who will be knocking on doors at my apartment complex to warn people about them and searching the local hotels to find them. It's a small town so there are only a couple places they could be shacked up in. I just don't want more people to fall victim to this scam and jeopardize both their safety and financial information.
