I allowed my son to use my "internet" credit card...very low credit line...to order a free credit report in late Januray 08. He's trying to make sure some hospital bills have been cleared, etc. He never received the report or any email traffic, so he though using my credit card with his name didn't work. Wrong answer!
Not knowing he didn't get what he ordered, I didn't worry about it...until I got the credit card statement. I was billed in Feb 08 for $29.95 - Privacy Matters, $1.00 - Privacy Matters, and $1.00 - Your Savings Club. He works offshore, so the next time he was in, I questioned him about it. He knew nothing. So I called Privacy Matters in late March 08 and finally was successful in cancelling the AP*9PrivacyMatters account...or so I thought.
March 08 bill comes in - Your Savings Club - $1.00, Privacy Matters - $29.95, Privacy Matters - $1.00...so I call again and am assured the cancellation will be processed. But no money could be refunded because my son did not cancel an account he did not know he had.
April 08 bill arrives - Your Savings Club - $1.00, nothing else out of the ordinary. So then I call Your Savings Club...with extreme difficulty reaching a human. I am assured it will be cancelled. Dummy here wrote down the cancellation confirmation number and promptly ate it, I guess. Don't know where it went.
May 08 bill in not yet out, but I checked online - May 16, Your Savings Club - $1.00. I'm a patient man, and $1.00 is not going to break me...and I can cancel the little credit card and not miss it. I found a number that connected me to Canada and was given a U.S. number where I could speak to a human - 877-680-8570. After receiving a cancellation confirmation number and assurance the last $1.00 would be refunded, I asked to speak to a Supervisor. The Supervisor said she could, under "special circumstances", authorize one more buck be credited to my card account. Whoopee! I'm really getting somewhere.
So, boys and girls, I'll be waiting to see the next card statement to see if this really did any good...and I will report back. I also referred the supervisor to this site and suggest they all seek employment elsewhere.
For Your Savings Club human contact, use 877-680-8570. That number will NOT show up on your card statement.
The long and the short of it - my son never realized he was signing up for anything but a free report, and when it didn't work, he thought it didn't work. If you can, always keep on hand a low-balance credit card when dealing on the internet. My wife's mid-five figure card was compromised, but we caught the guy ordering computer parts online and trying to change the card address to a NY...she uses my "little" card now on the internet.
I'm hoping somebody, somewhere will start a class action lawsuit. I will participate!
