On Sunday, July 12th , having heard on the news the night before that prices were going to jump , I stopped at Chevron to fill my tank with gas. I already had a just over a quarter tank of gas in the car when I arrived. The price of regular was posted as $3.29 a gallon. I proceeded to fill my tank and was surprised when the total came to $59. My car is a 97 Toyota Avalon. The tank fits 18.5 gallons. The warning lights turn on when there's 2.5 gallons left. $59 at $3.29 a gal = 17.9 gallons. Even when gas prices reached over $4 and my gas light was on- it never came out higher than $63. Starting out with 1/4 tank means there was at least 3.5 gallons in the tank- making it physically impossible to fit an additional 17 gallons. I suspect the pumps are set up to pump undersized gallons(for lack of better description) The math in my case indicates that aproximately .83 of a gallon went in for every full gallon shown on the pump. Its the only explanation that fits the evidence. While it doesn't sound like a big deal. .. Consider this: 17.93 gal costs $59 while 15 gal costs $49. On a single car partial fill up- they scamed $10. This busy station- with its crazy low price tat haddnt jumped up yet... It would have been slammed all day resulting in thousands of dollars in scammed revenue! Note: Each Chevron is separate franchise and the actions of this one crooked station does not mean its happening at any other Chevron station. And it may have been done only on that day. As a precaution- I'd go elsewhere and always take notice when the numbers don't add up!

Fuzzy math and a lot of assumptions

First of all your report says it is on "Arco", but your title says Chevron.  So you can't even be consistant on where you were.  Next, you failed to post the address of this station so even IF there is an issue how in the world is anyone supposed to go elsewhere?

We then get to the title of your report, that states that it exceeded the capacity of your tank.  That again is incorrect.  By your own admission your tank size is 18.5 gallons and it pumped what you say is 17.9.  Now, if I check my math 17.9 is less than 18.5.  So you did not pump beyond the capacity of your tank.

We then get to the actual amount, $59.  Is that exactly $59 dollars?  Did you verify what the pump said as the price per gallon and how many gallons or did you just calculate that as well.  Why is this important?  Because it is very possible you selected the wrong grade of gas and for example didn't pay $3.29, but perhaps $3.59.

As you will not have $59 equal exactly 17.9 gallons, since $3.29 is actually $3.299 only 17.88 gallons.  Now of course to you that is still too much, but failing to put things like this down especially when you can't even get the gas station right brings things into question.  Did you at least print out a receipt?

Just a side note on your 18 year old car.  You are also assuming that after 18 years it is still working perfectly that the gas light comes on at exactly 2.5 gallons.  That when your gage reads 1/4 of a tank you actually have 1/4 of a tank.   But even with that we fall victim to your fuzzy math.  1/4 of 18.5 gallons is 4.625 gallons not 3.5(although you did say at least).  And yes I am aware that this in your mind makes your point stronger....IF your gas gauge is accuarate and every thing else is as you say.

So unless you removed the gas from your tank and measured how much was left, there is no way you can with 100% certainty know how much was in the tank.

Now, with all of this I am not saying that there might not be something wrong with the pump, but even on this you are accusing them of it being intentional and they know about it.  Okay, so answer this.  If it is intentional and it is so wide spread with this busy station, how come there are not hundreds of reports on it?  Are you the only one smart enough to notice?

But there is something better you can do.  Not even knowing where you got this gas you can go to the County Department for weights and measures(may be a different name) that verify the accuracy of pumps.  If you have a question you can go back to that gas station and look for the official seal on the pumps.  It will list the county and department.  That deparment will have a way to report suspect pumps and they county will investigate.  But they need specifics so if you tell them arco and it was a Chevron without an address they won't even attempt to investigate.  They will also want the exact pump you were talking about.
