As the cabin crew came over the P.A. to announce our arrival in Baltimore, 23 hours late, I thought to myself, why are they not asking us to join their frequent flyer program?

Flying charter is and always has been a dodgy proposition. Mind you, when funds are limited and necessity arises, one is often at the mercy of the brokers, and 1997 was no different than any other year in that respect.

Trying to get to my new university in Maryland from Germany that year, I felt that a flight to Baltimore would serve better purpose than New York's usual hub. Having found a 335 dollar one-way ticket, I felt myself fortunate, and quite prepared for some discomforts along the way.

Little did I know to expect the initial line, snaking through the Franfurt terminal some three-hundred deep. The flight was purchased through TWA, but it became readily apparent that TWA would not be operating it, as my experiences with TWA previously had been fairly decent, at least in terms of having enough check-in counters.

By the time three hours had passed, and the batteries had already died in my Walkman, I began to rue not having paid the extra money for Lufthansa, who, even if comparably uncomfortable in cattle class, would be germanically punctual. The 3pm departure began to stretch, until at 12.45 am we did manage to get a debarcation gate. We lifted off the ground in their brand new 767 at 2.30 am, en route to the New World.

At about 8am we circled and the pilot came on to announce that we would shortly be landing at Shannon, Ireland. On landing we were welcomed to Shannon, though I don't recall this having been a part of the itinerary on this non-stop flight. We were also informed that debarkation was mandatory, and that we would be passing US customs. Now for all those who feel jilted by those brave defenders of America, don't feel that it has to do with your race or anything else, these fellow are mean and rude to everyone, and my blond white person is not immune.

So at around 11 we depart again for Baltimore, which on arrival is somehow closed for some urgent item, undisclosed, so we don't divert to say , Dulles, but rather, hover for an endless two hours, until, finally we arrive in a very windy Baltimore airport where there is apparently no gate to accept us, the starving huddled mass that we are.

Some two more hours pass before we are marched down the stairs to a bus that seems to take as long as the flight...hmmm, money saved is...something.
