My 1998 Passat did the same thing. I have owned over 50 cars in my life, changed the oil every 3,000 miles and this engine and tubo seized because the pick up screen on the oil pump gets clogged, the screen is too fine and the engine runs too hot and creates carbon deposits that plug the screen. This is a bad engine and all of the mechanics that work on Audi's and VW's know it. The shop in Columbus that finally fixed it by ordering a new engine from VW (we got the last one in the warehouse that week) bill was $7,500. VW sells a lot of the engines. No help from VW and Bull crap from dealer White Allen.

I visited the dealer three times, never got rude or mad, they were simpathetic but just typical dealer BS. I wrote the dealer a personal letter, he never responded. I had all of the oil change receipts also, but they finally got mad that they weren't changing the oil. Well, to get that done at their garage you have to have an appointment two weeks in advance and pay $89.00 for it.

I will never buy another VW. I heard they weren't selling very well anymore. They deserve it. I hope their business fails. By the way the German Bosch certified mechanic that fixed it drives a Toyota. He says, they aren't as fun to drive, but you will never see me again.

What grade/type of oil were you using in that engine? It's supposed to be 5W20 Synthetic. Every case of sludged up engine I have ever seen, is due to lack of proper maintenance. When the factory says to use Synthetic oil, they mean DO NOT USE CONVENTIONAL OIL.
