I have been a Bank of America customer for over a year, having both a checking and savings accout with them. I fell into their "Keep the chage" promotion and signed up. I had my paychecks direct deposited with them and just used a debit card to acess my funds since they do not have a branch in my state.

Seemed like somehow or another, I was always coming up over drawn, not alot, by a dollar or 2, therefore I would get hit with their fees, $35.00 each time. I decided to cancel the keep the change, and see if that helped, which of course, one way or another it never did. I would always go negative before payday, and I kept records of all transactions and knew to the penny what I would have. Viewing online, things never added up perfect. That was strike one

Strike two was when all the sudden they started charging me a fee for my savings account after 8 months w/o ever being charged a fee. I always kept just a bare min. amount in, no more than $10, ususally less from day one. I asked to cancel the account and it took over 4 months for that to happen.

Strike 3 happened last week. I signed up for an account at Chase because they have tons of local offices here. I decided to keep my BOA account open so that I would not have to switch the few places that I had auto bill payments set up with, and had set it so X amount would be deposited into BOA, and the rest to Chase. Come payday, I use my BOA debit card to get fuel, assuming all was fine and dandy since I never had a problem on payday with any deposits, and the correct amount was put into Chase (I keep a spreadsheet that keep and down to the $ amont of what my check will be due to not getting the same amount weekly). I went to work, and started looking and my deposit was not in my BOA accont. I went to payroll and they pulled the change forms and the direct deposit slips and all looked good, routing number matched the deposit form, account number matched, so we assumed it would post that day, just a delay with BOA.

2 days later I get an alert that I am now over drawn with my BOA account and we cannot figure out why. I went and looked and my deposit was still not there. I looked at my check stub and my BOA account book and noticed that the routing number on the checks (all I had were the carbon copies, I was out of checks) and deposit slips were not the same. I looked at my stub and noticed it matched the slip, but not the checks. I called BOA up and they explained that the deposit slips were not to be used for direct deposits, only for internal use. I found that odd, that they did not have it written on the slips anywhere, BUT upon looking at the slips closer, they had a routing number for ACH but it was in such fine print hardly anyone can see or read it. I argured with them, all the way up the chain of command asking that I not pay the over draft fee, but they would not budge, since the deposit slip was what I used for the direct deposit.

Due to those issues, I have closed my accounts at BOA, not that I have a ton of money there, but it is one less account than they had, and I will spread the word to avoid them due to their unfair practices and them changing the terms of the account at a moments notice to benifit them.

Banks have been using different ABA numbers to handle deposits and checks for a few years now in order to safeguard their account holders from people taking the deposit slips and raiding an account. In other words, a criminal could not raid an account for which the ABA only accepted deposits for. Regarding strike 3, I would place a lot of blame for this on your Human Resources Department and not a whole lot on your bank - they have known for a long time that banks have begun this practice and would have not accepted the deposit slip for your direct deposit. Your HR/Payroll Department should never have accepted anything other than a copy of a cancelled check under any circumstance as the valid account for your direct deposit. On strike 1, something must be wrong with your recordkeeping; if your records match the bank's, then you should not be off. I would agree regarding the "keep the change" program - just a dismal failure. But you should not be off once you got off that program. There must have been a few reasons why you were off, otherwise you would have identified the specific reason. I would have closed the account for strike 2 alone - that sort of thing is an unconscionable act by a bank, and if they didn't reverse the charges, then yes - leave and go to a bank where they won't fee you. However, I would give the bank a chance to make it right and of they don't, tell them good-bye and close the account on the spot.

YOU DID THE RIGHT THING BY CLOSING YOUR Bank of America account! Keep SPREADING THE WORD on the WORLDWIDE WEB! You can also spread the word at this BusinessWeek Article entitled- A CREDIT CARD YOU WANT TO TOSS (you can 'Google' it!) It's about how Bank of America RAISED credit card interest rates on customers without any reason!! Many were in 'good-standing' and never missed a payment! You can also read how Bank of America allegedly took out 'secret life insurance policies' on current & former employees!! Simply 'Google' this- RIP OFF REPORT #411913, and read it!!! You can also read what a Harvard Business Professor said to his class in late 2004 by simply 'Googling' this- RIP OFF REPORT #269041, and reading the Update entitled- 'Blame it on a Lawyer' All we have to do is this- SPREAD THE WORD on the WORLDWIDE WEB, right? Then 'Google' this- RIP OFF REPORT #261157, and read FED POEM. It's about banking too, right? The Federal Reserve is a private corporation owned by a 'cartel' of bankers, according to the documentary- 'AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FASCISM', right? Boy, these bankers are certainly in some DEEP 'doo-doo', wouldn't you agree? But the $700 BILLION 'bail-out', which is TAXPAYER'S money, will help out all these bankers, won't it? Guess what? WE'RE- 'Only a pawn in their game.' - Dylan GO STEELERS! GO HARVARD! GO CASH-IN ALL YOUR STOCKS, IRA'S, 401K's, INVESTMENTS........and anything else you DON'T WANT TO LOSE IN 2009!!!!!!!!!
