though I don't appreciate the tone of his/her message, the message itself was correct. There are way too many complaints on here about how banks manipulate accounts. Beleive me when I say there are no mysterious back rooms where bank employees watch accounts and manipulate them so they can get you. It's very simple folks. KEEP A REGISTER, AND RELY ONLY ON IT. The minute you use your card -- at the pump, swiped at a restaurant or store -- write a check or schedule an online payment, subtract that from your own balance and view that money as GONE FOREVER from that moment. I honestly am flabbergasted at the number of people who can't or won't do basic addition and subtraction. KEEP A REGISTER. If you do, it doesn't matter how a bank processes transactions -- highest to lowest, backwards to front, alpha, numeric, alpha-numeric, left to right, right to left -- or when. Do this, save yourself a lot of time, energy (it takes a lot to be mad), and, most important, money. D said it. A bank account is not a right, it's a privilege...and one that can be taken away. If it is, you will experience how difficult life is without the privilege of a bank account. But if it makes you feel better, continue to blame everyone and everything but yourself.

BB&T not a rip off - You are not writing down your purchases

It's as simple as that! If you are honest you would tell me that you do not keep a register of your debit card purchases, checks, or ACH drafts. You keep this information in your head, or you call Phone 24 or online banking and check your available balance. Do you ever eat at a restaurant? Do you ever get gas and use your debit card "pay at the pump"? Did you know that the gas stations only obtain an authorization "hold" of $1.00 no matter how much gas you purchased? If you go inside the store after the gas is pumped the cashier will obtain an authorization on the total because the gas is already pumped and everything is finalized. Pay at the pump doesn't know how much gas you will get. These gas stations have programed their pumps to communicate with your bank and only obtain an auth. code for $1.00. The bank commits to the total no matter how much gas you get. Anyway, this means it places a hold on $1.00 not the total. Do you call the bank and tell them when your available balance is higher than you expected? I didn't think so. So you take advantage of the excess $$$. If you had every debit card purchase, ATM w/d, check, etc documented in your checkbook register, on a piece of paper or anywhere, that is your ONLY accurate balance. I deal with people every day that do not want to take responsibility for irresponsibility. They always want to blame someone else. The bank didn't overspend. YOU DID! I know you are in college and money may be tight. All the more reason to keep good records especially if you are in school for accounting!?! Oh, did you or any of you reading this response know that restaurants hold an extra 20% whether you leave the tip section blank and cash on the table? This results in a hold for a higher amount than you expected. Who's fault? Not the banks. They process transactions based on where you shop, eat, etc. If a merchant enters false information it's up to you to keep your receipts, log your debits in your register and faithfully balance your checking account. If you people will not commit to this then you do not need a checking acct. The debit card is not a necessity, it's a luxury and a luxury that the bank can take away if you are abusing it. The advise that you were given by someone before me was good advice. But, before you go into one of the branches and bother someone that is trying to get new business, sit down and take a look at how you handle money. Maybe you should purchase a VISA debit card with the money you would use to make a deposit. It won't let you overspend. Yes there is a charge to purchase a VISA gift card. An outrageous $2.95. You know what, this would certainly save you in the long run because I can be certain you are getting killed by overdraft charges. Oh and if you want to talk about how expensive those are... I'll bet you didn't realize that one bounced check, debit card purchase, etc causes financial institutions alot of extra manpower. Grow up Travis. Either use cash or buy the VISA gift card. You are "screwing" yourself!!!!!!!

Travis, Let me help you out a little. I work at BB&T. I understand what you are going through and feeling like your money is disappearing can make you feel hopeless. I would suggest that you go into your branch in London and sit down with a Relationship Banker and tell him/her that you would like them to go over your transaction history with you. They can show you every transaction and explain to you the overdraft charges and if this is your first overdraft occurence than you might be able to get some of those fees back. Sometimes we just make mistakes in our check book and believe we have money when we in fact don't. Believe me..I have been there..done it myself and I work there! The thing about a checking accounts and having a debit card along with it means that you must write down every transaction that you make. I see it too often. What happens when you use your debit card is that the funds usually come straight out of your checking account and you will be able to see that in your available balance, but what most people do not realize is that even though it has came out of there available balance it must be able to clear their checking account. If you spend money and do not leave money in there for the transactions to clear than that can create overdraft's. I hope this helps you out a little. If you have any questions just ask and I will answer them as best as I can. I also work in KY. And to your statement that BB&T has changed-they have never changed names they just buy out other banks and those banks change their names to BB&T. BB&t is the number 10 bank in the country..believe me they aren't going anywhere =)

If so did the money you deposited in Dec. cover all those ezpenses ? you didn't really make it clear as to what was deducted from the account except for blockbuster, gas, taco bell , and 4 overdrafts at 34.00 each . You stated you live by yourself so I assume you pay the bills and thats where your money went.

Travis- You seem to have a grasp on what should be debited from your account. Do you have an account that you must maintain a minimum balance? Are there other fees or requirements of your account that you may not be incorporating into your running balance? Hard to offer much advise without actually reviewing the statement. I suggest that you physically go to your branch and have them walk you through all the transactions. Financial Institutions must account for all transactions so it's your right to challenge them and make them walk you through the entire month if necessary! Good luck!
