I don't know if Best Buy broke any rules here per say. Your situation was obviously handled in a very clumsy and unprofessional way, and it would be a nice gesture from them to give you a free warranty on the new notebook, but honestly they don't really have any contractual obligation to do so, and it would only be as an act of concession if they did. That said, Best Buy's Geek Squad is about the last place I would EVER recomend a person to take a notebook. We all hear horror stories about notebooks sent into the manufacturer for a repair and that getting botched, but trust me, adding the Geek Squad into the equation NEVER makes things easier on anyone. If you have a problem with a notebook I always recomend calling the manufacturer first. If you have a problem with a desktop, I always recomend a well reviewed local place or free-lance tech with good "street cred" in almost any town of a decent size or college population you'll find some of these.
