Almost got taken yesterday by Best Buy's deceptive and dishonest pricing practices. Wandering through doing my Christmas shopping I noticed large signs saying the Linksys 802.11g wireless router was "on sale" for only $49.99! That seemed like a great prices as this normally sells for about $8 more than that.

I picked one up along with my other items (DVDs, CDs, etc.) and headed for the cash register. At the end of the transaction it seemed like I'd spent more than I should so I went back over the receipt. The actual cost of teh router was $69.99 ($15 more than I would pay on Amazon or at CompUSA). The $49.99 price was "after mail-in rebate."

Admittedly, if I bent down and looked VERY closely at the shelf tag the $69.99 price was displayed in fine print above the much larger $49.99 price. None of the "sale" tags mentioned the higher price.

I wonder how many people actually get those rebates? How many people don't even notice the stupid things, think they are getting a good deal, and wind up paying MORE than they would at an honest store?

Okay, rant is done. Thanks for listening.

Anybody who shops for electronics should know about rebates. Where have you been? I cannot remember the last time I saw a good deal on something in a computer store that didn't involve a rebate. Best Buy does a great job of making sure you get the rebate. They print out the form with clear instructions for you at the cash register and hand you evrything you need in an envelope including a copy of the receipt to mail in. I worked at a competitor a couple years ago. At the time I was told about 60% of the rebates go unclaimed. It is the unclaimed rebates that pay for the ones that go claimed. I make sure I claim all my rebates, still, I miss one now and then.
