I BOUGHT A 2001 C2500 H/D TRUCK FROM BILL HEARD CHEVROLET IN NOVERMBER 2000. AFTER THE FIRST OIL CHANGE, I NOTICED EVERY TIME WE STARTED THE TRUCK IT WOULD KNOCK FOR ABOUT A MINUTE. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT BILL HEARD AND THEY JUST SAID ITS A DESIGN FLAW BUT WOULD NOT HURT ANYTHING. I TOOK THE TRUCK BACK A SHORT TIME LATER AND HAD THEM KEEP IT OVERNIGHT SO THEY COULD START IT THE NEXT MORNING AND HEAR THE KNOCKING, WHEN I WENT TO PICK UP THE TRUCK I WAS TOLD ITS NORMAL BECAUSE ITS THE H/D AND IT TAKES LONGER FOR THE OIL TO GET TO THE ENGINE AND IT DIDNT PASS THE 2 MINUTE TEST, SO THEY WOULD NOT INVESTIGATE ANY FURTHER.

I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP CLOSE BY AND THEY SAID THE KNOCKING WAS CAUSED BY AN OIL FILTER (FRAM). NOT A GM PRODUCT. I HAD THEM CHANGE THE OIL THEMSELVES AND IT STILL KNOCKED. THEY SAID IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW ALSO AND COULD NOT BE FIXED. I RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THEY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM IN 1999 AND HAD TO FIX THE PROBLEMS. I'M WONDERING IT MY 2001 HAS GOT A 1999 ENGINE?

I DID CONTACT GM/CHEVROLET AND THEY GAVE ME, AFTER SOME DISCUSSIONS, A WRITTEN ENGINE WARRANTY FOR 100,000 MILES. OF COURSE THIS DESIGN FLAW WAS NEVER MENTIONED WHEN WE WERE BUYING THE VEHICLE AND THE CHEVY DEALERSHIPS ALL AGREED IT IS A DESIGN FLAW. I CONSIDER IT BAD ADVERTISING WHEN SOMEONE ASKS ME IF MY TRUCK IS A DIESEL (BECAUSE IT KNOCKS) I JUST GIVE THEM MY STORY AND REFER THEM TO FORD. MY NEXT VEHICLE WILL BE A FORD.

Possible Solution worth a shot

Try using a quality synthetic oil in your truck, along with a filter equipped with an anti-drainback valve. This will keep oil in the filter when the engine is shut down. I am an Independent AMSOIL dealer and a few of my customers have commented that it has helped their chevys with the same problem you are experiencing. I'm not saying it will solve yours but it would be worth a shot.
