Bob Shafer of R&F Construction advertises on Craigslist in Youngstown Ohio under skilled services. He offers a 5 year written warranty on all labor. I contracted him to do roofing, fascia, and vinyl siding on my home. I was charged for 30 feet of ridge vent but only 20 feet was installed. The original quoted price was $2200, but ended up being $2700 do to the price of shingles going up and additional decking. The decking was not cut flush with the original decking and the drip edge looks horrible since it's not straight. The top row of vinyl siding is falling off the front of the house. There are 3 lap joints which now have gaps over 1/2 inch where the vinyl was cut to short. The aluminum wrap around the windows looks terrible with dents and wrinkles at the corners and the caulking looks like a first grader did it.

Mr Shafer will no longer return my calls and failed to respond to the BBB when I filed a complaint with them. His wife came by the night they were notified of the complaint and stated Bob had had a heart attack and had been in the hospital.

His craftsmanship is poor at best, though his prices don't reflect it (he is not the lowest nor highest on prices). It took 3 weeks to do the siding on an 800 sq. ft. home.

Dude,

You got a LOT of work done for $2700.00  Is is possible that you let your wallet dictate whom you chose to do your work?  While you are entitled to good craftmanship in whatever contractor you pay, as the saying goes "you get what you pay for".

I'm sure it did take a little longer to finish the job, the contractor was bouncing back and forth to jobs that made him some money.

I'm not defending poor workmanship or poor business acumen.  All I'm saying is that when you want a job done right, pay a fair wage for a craftsman to do it. Choose a company that has been in business for a good long time that has an excellent, not good, reputation.  Talk to some of the prior customers.

I trust had you done those things, you would have gotten a better picture of the type of work you could expect.  Certainly the fantastic 'deal' you recieved for the amount of work done.  In the end, the only person responsible for your dissapointment on the work done on your home, was ultimately you.

'In for a penny, out for a lbs'.  You see, the money you paid him for this job is long since spent.  you'll have to look  at what you consider inferior workmanship for period of time much longer than that.

Then his wife came and told you he had a heart attack and was in the hospital, and you still wrote this report?  Geez, have some compassion, let the man get healthy and address your issues with him then.

If you still get no satisfaction, chalk it up to being cheap.  Hire another to do the work properly.  I'm sure once you total the two it will be much more expensive had you hired the right person, who probably charged more money initially to do the job right the first time.

I think I'll title this 'CONTRACTOR BEWARE'. Because of the economy there are many out there simply trying to feed their family that is willing to cut a fine margin simply to get work.  Then of course there are others who capitalize on this for their own personal gain.

You want $10,000.00 worth of work?  Pay $10,000.00 Don't hijack the man and expect him to care about your home MORE THAN YOU DO!

Then assasinate his character publically when he's stuggling?  Come on America.  We can do better than that.
